Finally happened at 340k miles, the power steering went out on my 2006 HHR

I was surprised that it took this long, but the power steering finally went out on my 2006 HHR 2LT at 340,xxx miles. I vaguely remembered a recall, but when I ran my VIN it said there is nothing on it. I also remembered something about an extended warranty on it, but then again I can't find anything on GMs website about that either. This is kind of annoying, but ohh well, I guess I have some work ahead of me.

Go to a GM dealership, Chevy, Buick, Cadillac, it doesn’t matter , there is still that extended warranty.

^^^^👍

Lots of stories of owners being told no, because they didn’t know to ask about the extended warranty, which is so long it might as well be lifetime. (999,999 miles I think?)

Many stories suggest persistence may be needed. Many stories of dealers trying to tack on bogus charges. Should be $0 out the door. Several stories of being fixed for free even if technically not covered.

NOW there's a power steering recall on GM vehicles?! No, it's a warranty extension! - Page 27 - Chevy HHR Network
This link is to the last page, of 27 where I tried to sum up.
You could try either searching this site or look at the recall area on this site.

I posted a link! About the extended warranty

Yes, I see where your post discusses both a recall and an extended warranty, affecting different ranges of cars.

Recall is NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V153000, 2009-2010 HHR, posted right here in these forums:

And then later they extended the warranty to 2006-2009 Lifetime.

Good news, I have an appointment at the Chevy dealer I use on May 3rd to get it done at absolutely no cost to me. They added the HHR to my profile (I also have a 2020 Equinox I bought on December 30 2020) and checked the VIN. The lady at Gates Chevy World in Mishawaka said she has never seen anything like that coverage. Thanks for the help here!

I would have used the Chevy dealer closest to me, which is where I got my "free" 1st service at but the service manager came out and tried to tell me in this super unctuous voice that regardless of what GM and the oil life monitor said my car needed the oil changed every 3 months or 3,000 miles. When I told him I had been an engineer at Cummins for 12 years and had very extensive training and knowledge about engines, lubricants, etc. he doubled down so I didn't say a word, I simply will never step foot in there again.

I had a Toyota Pickup that came with "free lifetime oil changes"; the book said every 5,000. Everything was good for the first year, then the dealer leased the oil change operation; "if you don't come in at every 3,000 miles exactly on the odometer" . In other words the odo had to be a multiple of 3,000 in order to get my free change, oh and make an appointment a week or 2 ahead. I took that to mean "go away, we don't want your business". Next new truck was a Nissan.

Great news! Be sure to post a follow up about their service.
