Fuel gauge not working
Fuel gauge not working
Well I made the mistake of overfilling the tank and now the gauge is wonky. At first it showed a quarter of a tank when I knew it still had almost a full tank. When I shut the car off it worked again. This morning I got in and now it shows empty. The gauge does pulse a bit but then goes back to empty.Unhooked the battery and it worked again but when I shut it off and restarted it. It failed again. Not showing any codes and the dic is still showing the fuel range. Not sure if it is right though.
I read other threads about this problem and saw Don saying it could be the charcoal filter.Question can I try replacing it? Or is it the sensor? If I need a new sensor (and fuel pump) What is a good brand?AC Delco i could not find. The only brand I know that RA sells is Delphi.Any suggestions on a decent after market part?TIA

I don't think I ever said anything like that. The canister has nothing to do with the gauge. Over filling can flood the canister, rendering it useless.
I would run it until the next refill and hope it starts working right. Might need a new pump.

Yeah not sure where i saw that maybe wishfull thinking or an unrelated issue someone was having.Am I correct in assuming that if the DIC is still reading the MPG and fuel range the sensor must be working?
Also if anyone has a reccomendation on an aftermarket replacement part I would appreciate it.

How sure are you that the tank is really full? A wonky evap system can shut off the pump, keeping you from adding fuel.
I don’t disagree with running the fuel down, but fill up your lawnmower supply and carry it in the back.

I am positive the tank was full.Drove it yesterday.Gauge didn't work.Came home shut it off then turned the key back on it worked.Went to the store this morning it didn't work.Got back in the car after shopping and it worked all the way home showing almost a full tank which is correct . Hoping it will not be an ongoing issue.Going to order the Delphi pump just in case. Thanks everyone.
Just thought I would update for any future readers of this thread.I purchased a used instrument cluster and the fuel gauge is now functioning perfectly. The gauge completely stopped working not long after my last post.Apparently the stepper motors in the cluster can and will fail from time to time.
Not yet. It may be cheaper to fix the old cluster but I plan on being buried in it so I may not even bother.I will use my trip meter to keep track of the actual mileage. Thanks for your help Don.I found an old thread where someone had the same fuel gauge issue and you said if the MPG and fuel range were still working it had to be either the gauge itself, or the wiring between the gauge and the BCM.
