fuel pump replacement

Dear Team, Replacing the fuel pump on 2008, HHR, 2.2. I have NOT dropped it yet but it has a strong smell of fuel when FULL. Not so much when 3/4 or less of a tank level. Can see where it looks like fuel has washed over the top of the tank when viewed from
the back (of the car looking forward at the tank). Thinking problem is from the pump (cracked top area or.... the seal), the pump lines, or the tank it self (top areas). Main question is... do all the HHR, 2.2, have Quick- connect fitting on the line connections to the fuel pump.
Does any one first know of a replacement with / for a Quick- Connection fitting... OR anyone know where to get JUST THE LINES FROM THE PUMP TO THE EVPOR CHARCOAL CANISTER LINES AND SUPPLY LINE AT THE BACK OF THE TANK... talking about the stock / factory
run/ set-up from the pump to first disconnect about 30" long? Again, some pumps come with these lines MADE on to the pump and Quick-Connections on the other end. Also does anyone have a good report on a fuel pump OTHER than a stock GM one or AC Delco... Brand name and place to get it.
Found this showing how to replace a Quick- Connection fitting (factory type with another like type, NOTE: can't find them to buy????) Looks like I could replace a made on pump set up the same way if one had the Quick- Connection fitting... SEE AT: https://inline.cellacore.net/documen...%20NFR0019.pdf Look at the picture part on page two. I now found Oldblue’s write up (very good work again) so know how to redo the fitting if I can find one. So what about info on another pump other than GM or
AC Delco? Address of place.

All pumps have bundy fittings, no hoses from the top of the pump assembly.
your local parts palace should have bundy male and female fittings assortment.
The pressure line from the pump to the line that runs to the fuel injectors is no longer available from GM
Most repair shops have kits that they can make replacement lines.

An example of Dorman kit

Same kit shows tools included in kit

As for fuel pumps, they are all pretty much the same, probably made in the same factory over seas, I have only installed GM pumps as they are complete with fuel sending unit and float

The Ultrapower also includes the float and level sensor same as the GM at nearly 3 X the price

Airtex has a general bad reputation.

As I said, I’ve only installed GM , more expensive but I’ve never had a failure with them.

There's some good information in this thread https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/gene...ll-tank-64786/

I remember someone having leaks on the top of the tank. You'll see a picture in the linked thread, the yellow round parts are what was leaking for the member I'm thinking of.

After the tank and pump fix...

To all: Thanks for the help, now what I found... the tank had leaks around the yellow vent line as told by the last writer RJ_RS_SS_350... He nailed it! I got a used tank that had the vent lines on and it cleaned up nicely. Put on the new pump and all went well.
Learned: better not to use a drive on lift as much better to jack it up at the frame and let the wheels and axel hang down for room to work the tank out!

Now... about 2-3 weeks later... I just got a Code PO 451... I'm praying it's the gas cap as it is 2008, has original cap and just turned 2000,000. I had the gas cap checked at the inspection station about 4-6 week ago and it checked good BUT looked bad, old, and the o-ring was flat and dry looking.
IF IT"S NOT THE CAP... what chance it's the "fuel tank pressure sensor"? Will a scanner tell the problem part? Looked like the fuel tank pressure sensor is on the top of the fuel pump which is new so hoping not to pull the tank again. Thanks for all input... JC PS ... going out to get a new Delco cap !

My money is the wires to the pressure sensor.
That test runs when the engine is off. it means that the computer is not getting a "reset to zero" signal during the P0442 test (small leak).
Here are other things to suspect:

Check the canister filter for any damage, the fuel tank pressure sensor should be new and came with the new fuel pump assembly

05.08.2023 UPDATE on fuel pump job

Been a few weeks from replacing the fuel pump and still getting a Code PO 451 after resetting code (now on the second reset) . Checked the fuel cap and was good, NO leaks, runs good. Today I got to a scanner and checked all the e-vac system sensors... all good.
NO history codes showing or any problems in general. The volts on the fuel tank pressure sensor was 2.2 at ideal and went up as the engine RPM went up. All looked to be working. NO gas smell. I checked the canister filter for damage when I replaced the pump, all
looked good. I think the next step is to do a smoke test as I'm thinking that what ever it is, it was there at the start-up with the new pump. Agree with Old Blue that the fuel tank pressure sensor was new and came with the new fuel pump assembly, so don't see how that
could be the problem... BUT... anyway it checked good and was working per the scanner. I did replace the fuel tank with a used one so no guaranty it is good... it came with the vac-lines on the tank so I used them.
So far the pump and sensors look / test good so will recheck the canister filter and lines and electric lines. Hope to get to that and the smoke test this week. Any thing other you can think of????? Thanks, JC
