holding RPMs when clutch is depressed

I have a 1LT 2.4 5 speed. When I depress the clutch to shift gears I've noticed that the tach either holds the RPMs or in some cases gains a few. It seems to do it in every gear, and doesn't seem to matter if I have just got off the accelerator, or if I've been coasting. Didn't know if it was something GM on has done on purpose, or if I need a good flashing. It's more of an annoyance than anything.

Mines doesn't instantly drop, but it drops. There may be a slight 1 sec or less before they drop. If I accidently bump the pedal before releasing, the rpm's might rise slightly, then drop as stated before. So I guess I don't understand your meaning of "holding rpm's". To me, "holding" means you push the clutch in and the rpm's stay the same.

Hi-winding motors act totally differnt. I think the DOHC VTEC I had in a delSol VTEC dropped pretty fast also. But that also had an 8200 redline and 8400 fuel shut off, stock.

Longhorn....
I too have a 2.4L MTX and have noticed what your trying to describe. The tach seems to hover (or gain 500rpm or so) when you push in the clutch pedal for all of a second or less. I remember reading a thread here that mentioned something about the computer doing this for ease of shifting? I know, I know... seemed a little wierd to me too, as I've only owned 1 ATX tranny over the last 15 years and none of them have ever done this. Then again... I've never owned a vehicle with 'drive-by-wire' nor an "electronic gauge cluster" (ever notice the gauges 'blip' after you turn the vehicle off??).
I, personally, don't think it's a problem as I have nearly 15000 miles on my vehilce right now an haven't experienced anything adverse regarding this. One thing you may notice is you shift light WON'T go on until you get to redline.. but that's fine by me!! No dummy lights...

I've never seen the shift light. Never saw a low fuel light either.

SO that light does work. I saw it in the manual, but though mine didn't work for some reason. Redline, shift light, ya think?

Yep... although somewhat skeptical about the shiftlight working or not (some 2.2 owners claim theirs NEVER works, whereas several 2.4 owners have proven it TO work)... it ONLY comes on very close to redline. I guess its a good thing you haven't seen it... which means your not abusing the car too much . I, personally, have witnessed it a couple times and seeing that it comes on just before redline, assume it illuminates just before all the limiters kick-in to depower the engine for longevity sake.
No dummy lights = a good thing
