Here's another question. Was it sluggish and noisy before the repair?

What repair did the brother in law do?

Timing chain is going to be around $1500, flex pipe by a welder around $100,

An HHR should hum.

He replaced the wrong part. The Solenoid was what he should have replaced as noted previously. Go back and read the previous posts and the thread about replacing the solenoids. It's an easy fix - and do check that exhaust pipe as others have suggested - it's right at the rear of the engine - that flex pipe is known to fail as miles build up.

My advice is: If you don't know anything about cars, don't buy a car "as is". Or get very friendly with a GOOD mechanic that does it for a living.

Thanks. Will take that into consideration when buying another car. Is it true that used car lots are not supposed to sell lemons or thats based on each state?

So are you saying to repair the flex pipe and solanoid?

When someone sells a car "as is" they know something is wrong, they just don't want to be obligated to tell you or fix it.

"As is" is for people who can figure the cost of repair into the cost of the car.

"As is" is their out, all they have to say is "it's a car" no other representation that they could be held liable for.

What ever made you think used car dealers are honest? There a entire joke books about them and lawyers.
