A little levity
Need an emissions test this month and I've had the p0442 code (small evap leak). Replaced the gas cap and then sanded and painted the fuel neck. Still no luck, so I pulled out my replacement vent line that came with the replacement fuel line I replaced a couple years ago. After getting covered in rust on this very hot morning, its on. When cleaning up I find this on the ground under the fuel tank area. Did all kinds of exploring under the car and online to see what it was from.

The code would indicate a faulty catalytic converter, rich condition can be a result of a dirty throttle body.

https://www.obd-codes.com/p0442 test the EVAP purge valve under the hood it should be closed , if any air can be vacuumed through it the valve is toast. I have had a few problems with that valve, and resolved it by purchasing an AC Delco piece from RockAuto, not one from Amazon that was claimed to be AC Delco, that one was counterfeit and leaked. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...+solenoid,4936 |
Yup, purge valve is next on the list if the code returns. Just figured I'd replace the rusty line since I already had it on hand. Been catching up on the maintenance during this virus time, front struts and rear brakes, firsts at 135k miles.

It doesn’t hurt to test the valve , just disconnect it and try to blow air thru it, if you can , the valve is faulty. I use a length of fuel hose to do this

Thanks for the tip on checking the purge valve. I'm sure that'll be the problem next time, but this time it was the rusted vapor line. Put about 75 miles on it over the last couple days and then passed emissions this morning.
