major issues after air filter change

2010 HHR LT- changed air filter at 143k miles and all hell broke loose. Check engine light flashing, ESC message, traction control not working, rough idle, terrible acceleration, horrid mileage. I took out the MAF sensor and cleaned it with MAF sensor spray cleaner but it did nothing. Do I assume I damaged the MAF somehow accessing the fort knox air filter housing. One other thing. When I changed the filter, I noticed that the air intake hose had a whole in it and the intake end wasn't seated in the hole in the fender (to draw air in from outside the engine compartment). So I re-seated the hose and patched the whole with tape. I have changed the filter many times and never had this issue and yes I plugged the MAF wiring back in after I cleaned it. What does the traction control have to do with anything related to the air flow or any of its sensors? So frustrating. Thanks in advance for the help.

Did you plug the O2 sensor back in after?

Bad Battery?

Check Engine Light Codes?

That would help us help you more than the story you told. They tell more detail about what, rather than items surrounding the plethora of possible causes.

Kevin. O2 sensor is not what he was working around. The O2 sensors are on the exhaust. Maybe you mis-spoke and meant MAF sensor.

Anyhow. Bigduke. Double check your work. Pay close attention to the MAF sensor plug. The plug in contacts can be easily damaged.

You could try clearing the codes by resetting it. Battery negative cable disconnect for 15 mins. will do it.

What does traction control have to do with this ? Many fault codes(CEL's) will trigger the computer to shut down certain systems on the car.
Seems like one of the common shut downs is usually the traction control.

The maf sensors are pretty tough,They hardly ever go bad for just cleaning them or touching them. But I agree with George.

D'oh! Yes, I meant MAF. I'm tired, and multi-tasking is failing me. Thanks FMG.

The code numbers would be helpful.

Perhaps you disturbed the wiring to the cam solenoids, or spark plugs, or injectors.

Flashing CEL means "park the car and have it towed to a mechanic".

The memory is the second thing to go. I can't remember what the first thing is.
