Way back when, I remember some hot rod buddies complaining about their Corvettes running hot, then had put a 195 degree thermostat in place of the 180 that their car came with, the engine management system went nuts!

Had the same symptoms last fall, changing the coolant made a huge difference. I still have a replacement cooling fan that may or may not get installed, but temps are running right around 195-210 (when I park and leave it running a bit) Change out the coolant...

Cooling Fans Do Not Come On

2008 HHR SS with just over 101,000 miles. Seems the car has been running, what I consider, hot lately - 199 -215 mostly in light traffic. Lately, it's been creeping up to the 220s but will eventually cool back to 200 or so with traffic moving. I just checked in my garage to see if the cooling fan was working at all. After about 2 minutes I turned on the A/C, no fans. Let it run about 10 minutes to get temp up to 203 with A/C on and still no fans. Could it be the fan itself or the fan control module? Or should I just "be safe" and replace them both?

I’d change the fan and module assembly to be sure it’s fixed, it is 16 years old!

Yep, change the whole assembly. Like Oldblue said, it's old. Do you really want to be driving, and wondering if the old part is going to fail, potentially ruining your engine?

fastsuv advised this in another thread , why take a chance.

And my line of thinking is , have think about replacing the thermostat, AC Delco 131-158 180 degrees.
drain and replace the Dexcool, 50/50 mix with potable water, I prefer the premixed ( getting lazy in my senior years!
think about how old that rad is! It might be time for a new one , cooling fins deteriorate, coolant tubes get weakened!
Then you could leave the water pump till your next time you replace the timing chain!

I appreciate the quick response. I figure it would make sense to change them both since I understand the control module plugs into the fan assembly. Probably time for a thermostat and coolant change as well.

My 2010 SS fan doesn’t come on until the coolant shows about 194 on the DIC. That’s with the A/C on. Doesn’t go much higher.

Don’t know if it’s different with the A/C off. Manual trans if it makes a difference.
