need help with power steering, C0475

hello everyone, i hope youre all doing well. recently my mom asked me about the power steering on her hhr (2007 LT 2.4 4AT)
she said about 3 weeks ago on her way home from work when she stopped at a stop sign the car started dinging, a power steering warning came up on the dic, and the power steering went out. she said that she restarted the car and the power steering came back, and that the same thing happened to my dad when he was going to work. but recently the issue has gotten worse, she says when you start the car the power steering will work for anywhere from about 5 to 30 seconds before shutting off. she says restarting the car gets you another 5-30 seconds before the power steering goes out again. the power steering does shut off consistently, but the amount of time it works before shutting off is not consistent.

dtc C0475 is present. i checked fuse 1 under the hood as well as fuse 19 on the bcm and both are good. i read on google somewhere that the ground for the power steering is on the left shock tower, i found 2 ground on the left shock tower but they both looked ok (i didnt remove them and sand them, but there was no obvious rust or corrosion on them)

i feel i should note that i havent actually driven the car, im just saying what i was told. if anyone has any questions i can answer them as best i can or ask my her tomorrow. i like to think im pretty good with cars (im no mechanic, i just happen to know something about something) but none of my vehicles have electric power steering, and ive never had to work on electric power steering systems before so i honestly have no idea what im doing. if anyone can help i would appreciate it. thanks

The code indicates an open or short to ground in the EPS motor circuit. It is possible there’s a broken or corroded ground, or the power steering motor is faulty. My first suggestion is to tighten the 4 bolts in the under hood fuse box, they are 7mm, tighten them past any clicking , the problem might just be a loose connection.
GM did offer an extended warranty on the replacement of the motor for a period up to 10 years. Being a 2007 , that has expired, replacing the motor is not a hard job , there are how to videos on YouTube

Pretty straight forward

I am not sure if the 10 year limit is Canada only. Be safe and check. The link in my sig will find outstanding recalls/extended warrantees.
Otherwise, a new motor is less than $100 and easy to replace. Just 2 bolts and a electrical connection. If you are young with a good back it is easier.

Someone else pointed out the 10 year limit , from the USA 🇺🇸

It’s in here post #15 perhaps someone can post a copy from GM USA.
I don’t see why the limits of the offer would be any different.
I did find this , but it’s not from GM, approach a GM dealer, perhaps they will comply

had mine replaced about a year and a half ago, 2006 and was done at the local Chev dealer. doesn't hurt to ask...

I think the 10 year rule was for customer reimbursement, I had then do the work and get the part. No Charge when I picked up the car.

They were separate recalls at different times different countries.

TLDR - With any non-turbo HHR power steering failure, go to any GM dealer and insist on a free repair. Persistence may be needed, but it will probably work.

There was and extended warranty that was so long it might as well be lifetime. 999,999 miles or through 2040 or something. Also a recall. Which applies depends on the year. Most non-SS HHR's are covered, but I have seen reports of $0 repairs even for the few non-SS cars that are technically not covered. Apparently GM really really doesn't want you to die due to a bad ps motor.

Any GM dealer can address this. Some have never heard of this, so make sure they check for both the recall and the extended warranty. By all accounts, persistence pays.

These are $0 repairs, but there are many reports of dealers trying to tack on bs charges.

Theoretically, the problem was fixed in 2011 model year.
