No Voltage at Starter

2006 HHR
Starter making some noise, slow turning over initially.
Attempted to jump start car, smoke coming from front of engine.
Pulled starter.
Bench tested starter, does turn over but smoke coming from brush end of starter motor.
Because of smoke from front of engine, voltage testing at wires to starter.
No voltage detectable on either of the 3 wires at starter with key on or with key in start position.
Interior lights, accessories, head lights all work
All fuses appear intact
Is there a fusible link in large starter wire?
Where to go from here?
Thanks

If it was turning there was electricity.

The purple wire comes from the relay to the solenoid, it is hot when the relay is on.
One red wire comes directly from the battery, hot at all times.
The other red wire comes directly from the alternator. Should be hot where the 2 meet.
Ground is supplied by the mounting bolts.
Ground for the relay is on the front left of the transmission.

fuse #5 30A and relay #34

Starter is on order. On the car It wasn't turning after the smoke. Did turn on the bench. If the one wire is straight from the battery and there is no fusible link, must be my voltmeter?

Hmmm. Don't know Don. I just pull all my wiring schematics from a file on my desktop.
Someone here sent me the file. Thought it was you but I guess not. Maybe it was whopper.
I have noticed before that when we post up wiring schematic stuff in the same threads that they usually are a little different.
