Just to close out this thread. It must have been operator failure by my son with the multimeter. All is well with voltage. Thanks to everyone for the help.

Used to be you could use the engine hoist point as ground when jumpstarting; don't work on an HHR.

Glad you got it fixed, feel free to ask.

same problem with this but the starter was smoking the day i attempted to start er up

I had this very same problem starter would go made it 8,000 miles to visit a dying family member and came back home it was weary of starting a few times but went when i got back home that was it the very next day went to start it up and started to smoke it went once with a ole school tap the thing lol. anyway took the starter off and to this day I know it was the Lord who made this trip possible and these photos will show the proof WOW is all i can say now these scared me as to how this 2006 hhr made it there and back and i mean i stopped had to manyyyy times anyway here are a few photos and remember this there is a sensor right in there behind the starter so those of you who have a slow oil leak here is your problem it leaks from the sensor rubber $32.00 +taxes here in halifax but try to find a replacement for it but this is where you will find it leaking oil i had this for a year and guess what yup it leaked all the way into the starter i bought this second hand but put alot of work into it now so going strong with it will have it for another 4000,000 lol. anyway thanks
