If the oil galleys are gummed up, could an improperly installed solenoid flood the cam area, retaining enough oil for a dipstick check to make it appear as though there is “no oil”? Maybe the valve cover ought to come off.

 

When nothing shows on the dipstick, you might only be 2 quarts low. Not necessarily empty.
