peeling paint

who else is having problems with their paint peeling? my 2006 hhr started having little bubbles on the hood that became sheets of peeling paint. the car is well maintained. a mechanic recently told me he's mostly seen it with maroon cars like mine. i haven't seen any recalls or notices from chevy. my shifter pin broke a while back, an apparent design flaw, and my moon roof doesn't close right either, i forget what broke with that, but it's another common issue apparently.

No issues here.

Here in the Southeast, both in DC where I work and in NC where I live, maroon HHR's seem to suffer from paint shedding. GM called it "inter layer paint de-lamination" back in the early 90's when light blue and silver cars began losing their paint because of a supposed compatibility issue with the topcoats and the primer.

They painted my Beretta twice trying to resolve the problem, the second time it was sanded down to bare sheet metal, that fixed it.

If your HHR is losing its paint, check with your dealer, there might be a "secret goodwill warranty" to help correct the problem. If not you'll at least get it documented, and GM may investigate.

P.S. :welcome8: to the forum dr jeff!

GM had a real problem with peeling paint a number of years ago. I thought they had that issue solved, but apparently not. Haven't seen any peeling paint on my 2007, though the front end, hood, and half the left side was repainted due to an eighteen wheeler sideswipe when the car was about 8 months old.

In the mid-80s through about early 90s all the automakers had trouble with paint peeling off the primer.

That was the point at which EPA mandates forced automakers to start switching over to waterborne paints (lower VOCs).

To that point, there was many, many years of experience with solvent-based paints which resulted in a very reliable paint. Now the automakers had to use a newer product which, while designed well, didn't have the benefit of years of development.

Today's paints are pretty well developed and generally don't flake off anymore. Individual cars may flake over time, usually due to contamination before painting.

A few years ago Chrysler had a problem with some Jeep products where the paint would start peeling. They traced it to the type of deodorant some employees were wearing. The deodorant was getting into the air while they worked and contaminated the car surface enough to affect paint adhesion.

I say it's this too. Just kidding. I say it shouldn't be peeling at all even if it is a 2006.

I have a car that's 12 years old and the paint isn't peeling on it.

Yes, I have a 2006 model, grey pewter color and the hood started peeling, small bubbles just like you mentioned . Now the top of the front bumper is also doing the same thing. I also have a broken sun roof, the hook on one side of the track that helps it to open and close has broken in half.
