Service Items During An Engine Swap

Hello All-

I ended up getting a hold of a 2007 HHR for $900.00. Needs a motor. I have the old motor out and I am purchasing a new motor soon. I was just curious what items I should replace while the engine is out to make things easier. The new motor has about 88k miles on it. Examples being water pump, timing chain and/or timing chain tensioner, thermostat ect.

Thanks
Ken

All of those would be easier with the engine out but none of them are service items yet at 88K. That being said, I'd probably do all of those listed prior to installing a new engine as well as flushing the coolant passages and changing the oil (that probably should go without saying). You'd know what you were starting out with.

I concur, change the hard to get at stuff like the list mentioned, and check the flywheel for cracks and worn teeth for the starter

Don't forget the timing chain guides, get a complete kit. That would include water pump, tensioner, guides, oil spigot, sprockets & bolts maybe the balancer chain & sprockets.

Check your PM for some possible help.

Along with the above items I would also change the rear main seal. It is the hardest item of all of these to change once the engine is in the car. Might even consider changing the front crank seal as well since you would have the timing cover off.

Perfect. Thanks everyone! Going to HF to get an engine stand and will be working on it all week.
