Steering shaft, 2009 LT 2.2 litre

Hey Everyone,
Anyone on the site have any step by step instructions on how to install an Intermediate Steering shaft? Im replacing mine and wonder if there are any do's and dont's. This is a new repair for me and any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Pretty straight forward as far as replacement goes. I'm sure Oldblue will post up his info since he has replaced his before.

One Don't. DO NOT turn the steering wheel when the old shaft has been taken out. Or while you're putting the new one in. Turning the steering wheel when it's "free" could damage the clockspring inside.

Yep, Oldblue, chiming in, your gonna need a 13 mm wrench, a small hammer for the interior yoke up under the dash, you have to pull up the rubber boot, . Remove the pinch bolt in the bottom yoke , I used an air chisel to rattle the yoke up and off the rack.
Now the rack end is shaped so it only goes on one way , the column end you need to mark carefully at the split in the yoke, then it’s gonna line back up nicely. Now don’t move the front wheels or the steering wheel or as mentioned that clock spring is a problem.

This was the wrong part, notice the length of the yoke

The OEM yoke, that’s the lower pinch bolt

The hardest part for me was to insert back that rubber boot.

Steering shaft

How did you secure your steering wheel to keep it from moving?

Slight movement not a problem; kid playing road race is bad.

You want to keep the wheel close to centered.

I just made sure nobody touched the car whilst I was working on it , and made certain I did not move things very far, and moved it gently back when it did move.

Yep. Thats why i try to do all work on my HHR myself. Had an Envoy i took in to a shop for a new rack and pinion. Kid put it in fine but broke clock spring in process. Kept turning wheel. Shop owner reluctantly paid 580.00 for chevy dealer to fix it. Ive repaired my HHR myself thanks to advice from people like you on this site. Thank you donbrew
