when i install my steering shaft, in securing the steering wheel straight would tying it down to a front post under the seat real tight keep it from moving? Or what would be the best way to secure the wheel?.

That might get in the way when you crawl under there, my wheel stayed in position without a tether, You could go down over to the passengers seat rail.

thanks. I just want to be extremely careful when i do this and not create further problems...should i disconnect the battery? Reason being the airbag somehow being tripped.

Steering shaft

Getting ready to replace steering shaft today. Kinda puzzled. When it first started making noise it was always in the afternoons, never in the mornings. Noise is at a low minimum. Rarely hear it but a few times daily, always when turning at low speed. Wheel always goes back to center, steering is not hard. Noise started more after i had a angle sensor installed a few weeks ago. If im right the angle sensor goes at the end of the colum, in front of the yoke under the dash. This part has more than likely been on car since 2009. Im thinking shaft is really the problem. But trying to be sure.

That boot is a MOTHER****ER really. That literally is the hardest part. A FAIR WARNING that this will fix the rattle sound for some, but for others, including myself, the rattle is form the steering column itself, requiring removal of the wheel, air bag, etc.

Steering shaft, 2009 LT 2.2 litre

Funny story,
Last week i was in process of changing my steering shaft. After tying the steering wheel, i barely nudged it and the horn blasted till i disconnected the battery. Being unnerved i gave up on the steering shaft. My wife had earlier said that the knocking problem may be the sway bar links, so i installed 2 new links and have had no further problem with knocking or thump thump when turning. Guess the problem is solved.

Changing my intermediate steering shaft for sure tomorrow. Which yoke is recommended to be removed first, the one under car, or under the dash. Any tips on changing shaft would help. Never changed one before.
