I've seen completed motors with transmissions on craigslist at half that cost.

Yea, I think it's a rip off....

Go to an independent transmission shop (not a franchise like AAmco) for a second opinion, please!

I've already been recommended to an independent transmission with a good track record. I'll be taking it there real soon. I'll let you guys know what they say.

So I took my HHR in to a local transmission shop and guess what?!? My transmission is perfectly fine! So once again I am shocked (but not really) that the Chevy dealership had it wrong all this time. The owner of the shop said I have front end issues and took my car to his buddy's shop for a second opinion. Turns out it the axle joints (I'm not sure if that's the correct wording, I'm trying to remember his exact words) are completely worn out. So when I accelerate they wobble. He said he can take care of it for me so I left my car with him to get that taken care of. I'll get it back on Friday and will post what the final outcome is. I'm just glad I see the light at the end of the tunnel! :)

If this absolutely corrects your problem, I would take my receipts to the dealer who diagnosed and quoted $1600 for the converter repair/replacement. Talk with the SERVICE MANAGER and/or GENERAL MANAGER and explain your concern about the incorrect diagnoses and the estimated cost. The dealer management can't fix what they don't know is broken.

You might even get some type of "freebie" for your inconvenience and concern.

Actually I got all my money back already when they told me they "finally" found out what was wrong with my car. At that point, I had spent $490 with them and was quoted another $490 to replace the right control arm that was "supposed" to fix the issue but did not. They ended up eating that cost and refunded me my $490 from the previous visit. It was the service manager who offered me the refund. I took that chance to get my money back and run away from them! Glad I did!

Chevy replaced my right steering assembly (wrong diagnosis) and that cost me $490. They refunded me that money because they really have no idea how to fix my HHR. My car is still in the shop (not with the dealership) and should be out later today. I was quoted $600 for both ends of the axle joints to be fixed/replaced. I'm just waiting for a phone call from the mechanic telling me it's all good. Crossing my fingers!

Talking Finally!

Yes, my HHR is finally fixed! There was nothing wrong with my transmission after all. I am beyond happy now. Now I can get my brakes replaced and then the oil.

why didn't you have them do it while they had the cv shafts out? they were right there with the wheels off, probably even had the calipers off too
