I tried searching for the answer, but I didn't see an exact match. 2008 SS, 47,000 miles

I've been running 87 & 93 octane gas and was probably closer to 87 for a while. Yesterday I noticed the car running a little rough and put in 8.5 gals of 93. This morning the car was idling very roughly, bucking and surging at stops and the check engine light was on. I added Lucas octane boost and and drove about 50 miles.

I topped up with more 93 octane so it should be about 11.5 - 12 gals. in the tank. The light was still on so I had Auto Zone check the codes. They said possibly replacing the control module would fix it but it could be the camshaft or timing chain. I don't beat on the car so I'm doubtful about the timing chain.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience with this?

Running low octane fuel may be the cause, but its the code P0014 that has me thinking you are dealing with a bad Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid on the exhaust camshaft. I'd take it somewhere to have some more diagnostic checks done on it before committing to a new module, here's a link to a thread on the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoids. Its on a 2.4 but much of the info transfers over across the whole engine lineup.

Thank you, I saw that thread, but I was confused because it was 2 solenoids. When the parts guy looked it up it only showed 1 part $45. Is it different for the 2.0 L?

Just looked it up, this is the part he was looking at.

Yeah you have two solenoids, one for the exhaust cam, and one for the intake side. There might be a difference in part numbers for the 2.0, this is where a 2 liter guy needs to jump in...hint, hint.

Fresh and correct oil? Pull the valve out and make sure the screens aren't plugged. The GM part numbers are 12628347 (intake) and 12628348 (exhaust).

There were no codes or noticeable problems with mine, but it's something to check out.

The part you linked to is the sensor, not the solenoid valve. For the PO300 start by changing the plugs with new AC's gapped at .032''. The camshaft solenoid could potentially cause misfires as well if it's not working right.

Thank you for all of the responses so far.

The oil is correct and has 42% remaining life according to DIC.
According to what I've found so far, P0014 points to the exhaust cam position sensor. I only find 1 replacement part so I wonder if it is used for both intake and exhaust which seem to be located on the driver's side of the engine. It seems the solenoids are a separate part located under the air cleaner.

Auto Zone has the sensor mentioned earlier, but only carry the Autolite xp IRIDIUM I'd prefer to get all the parts at one place to cut down on driving if I can't borrow a car.

Lastly, is it ok to drive for short trips?
Please let me know if there is anything I'm missing so far.

Not intentionally, but that doesn't mean I'm not misunderstanding something.

Are you saying the solenoids are the problem, not the sensor as I was told?

It could be either the solenoid or the sensor, which is why you're going to need some more diagnostic work done to be sure. Sorry for the confusion that has evolved over this, its one of those deals where the chances are it could be Problem A, but you need to eliminate Problem B to ensure you're not wasting money.

Code P0014 is fairly specific "P0014 Exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) System Performance", but you'll note from the slip given to you by AutoZone, it could be one of five problems that need to be addressed diagnostically.

Plus you also need to check into the issues brought forth by code P0300, which are another five things to be checked into before you spend the money on anything. I'd take it to your dealer or a good diagnostic mechanic and have the codes pulled again and then have them go over it carefully.
