When I got the drive, I popped it in the computer, then went to windows media. Don't know if windows media placed a MUSIC folder there or it was already on the drive cause I did not look. Just used the sync tab and dropped a few songs then ran out to the car and it worked. After that I came back and opened MY COMPUTER and dragged larger number of songs in the MUSIC folder on the drive. It still worked.

I have had no trouble with any drives except one that was faulty anyway. As a side note, I use those little tiny micro sd readers. You can get one with an 8GB card here - http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0313670 for $25 and they only stick out about 1/2". Then you can load up as many micro sd cards as you like. I have only tried up to 8GB, but they all work great. BTW I organize my songs in folders by album. It gives me some organization without making navigation too difficult.

So user BMB tried a PNY 4GB with no problems.....and you used it and got the failure message. I also tried a PNY 8GB that a user on here uses with no problems....yet I get the error.........strange......and annoying......I'm almost ready to give up and just go back to making MP3 cd's.......What a bunch of crap. Thanks GM. As long as I have worked for them, radios have been one of their weak points.......

So my dealer called Tech-Line today and they said there are no known issues and no other complaints about this. Has any others on here with issues contacted their dealer? Anyway, they are sending my issue to engineering as they think it may be a compatibility issue....yet they say they have no lists of which flash will work ot not(translation: Some geek at GM slapped a USB port in without ever testing). I can handle a compatibility issue as long as there is a list of what works and what does not. Not fair that users have to keep buying flashes until one works. My tech also told them that I am using flashes that dont work for me but are working for other users........they had no answer. They also dont want my radio replaced until engineering figures out why it is doing this......translation: I am probably going to live with this until I am ready for a new car.Based on GM's track record,I am thinking this wont get resolved in a reasonable manner of time. Unreal.

From the little I know about computers(computers suck) there maybe other issues to look at. Since other people are having success with a certain drive and you aren’t, it could be the file structure you are saving or the folder options.

Another possibility, of course is you have a bad radio – take your drives to a dealer’s lot and try the other vehicles.

USB Update 2009 2LT.

Well, a co-worker got in my car yesterday and pulled his USB drive out and popped it in the port on my radio...... it worked! So he had an extra that I stole from him (along with the one he popped in. The model he gave me is: ativa 4gb high speed USB 2.0 portable Flash Drive. Office Depot item # 446-705. UPC code: 35854 22824. Listed $19.99. Little high, but it's chrome with an "almost blue cap" Looks good in the car. I noticed his files were all in the root directory with no other program files. I moved them all to folders and added more stuff. It works with or without them being in folders.

They ordered me a new radio today at the dealer.I'll post when its installed and hopefully working. By the way, the tech took the drives that are not working in mine and plugged them into a new Malibu and they all worked.
They are:
Sandisk Cruzer 8GB
Kingston Data Traveler 4GB
PYN Attache 8GB. None of those work in my car but work in the new Malibu. Hopefully they will work in the new radio........
I am using a Centon 8GB that worked for 4 days....then stopped with an error code... and is now on day 4 of working after I took it out and plugged it back in the next morning......so the jury is still out on long term working or not. Tech support thinks it's a compatibility issue but they gave the green light to replace the radio and start there.

Finally!

The more I read this thread, the more I thought it was the radio.
