What makes the loud noise from the right rear of the HHR?

Sitting at a stop light I noticed that the noise I hear from the right rear of the car seemed a bit louder tonight

What is exactly back there making this noise?? Is it the fuel pump? Any way to calm it down a bit?

I've heard it on a rental HHR so I know it just isn't mine

Almost like a whirring noise...like something mechanical is running from that back section of the car....I have my VTX today so I can't run out and check it out but tonight I'll take a ride to see if I can get a better answer for you.....mechanical whirring is the best I can say now

Fuel pump would be my best "over the internet and unable to hear the noise for myself" guess. See if the noise is louder when fuel level is low as to compared when you have a full tank. Doesn't mean that it is necessarily going to quit, just that it is louder than others. I have an employee who owns a 2002 silverado that has been whirring for the last 3 years but has never failed to start the vehicle.

If it's not that, check to see if you have a cat stuck to the inner fender liner.

LOl...actually it does seem a bit louder when the fuel level is lower....I filled up 2 days ago and last night I didn't notice it as much...worth seeing dealer on? Is the pump part of the 5/100k warranty as I'm at about 42K already

The fuel pump/sender is covered by powertrain warranty.
