I have my stereo faded 1 click towards the rear, bass up 2 clicks and treble up 1 click.
Try that, it works for me.

I have heard that putting the rear shelf in the top position will increase the bass volume and effect significantly with the stock sub.

I have come to the conclusion that the "Premium" stereo system in the HHR is, basically, crap.

I'm driving my wife's Honda Accord this week (HHR is in the body shop - my fault), and her 290 watt stereo sounds 1000% better, especially the bass, than the cheapie Pioneer unit in my Chevy.

I'll buy another Chevy, probably an Equinox, but will get the base radio and and replace it with some aftermarket stuff.

I'm a snob in many aspects of my life. ( tattoos, brews, car stereo ) as a self proclaimed audiophile, no stock system is worthy. Stage 1 of the install is done. Stages 2 and 3 will require some serious down time.

couldn't agree more. Premium system is crap, as are most premium systems. The used SS I found had it but I would never pay for it as an option. At least it had the wiring so upgrading was easy.

With the understanding that the wiring is in place, what upgrades has everyone done to the premium system? I had a great aftermarket on my old vehicle and the Pioneer system on my 2010 HHR is barely OK. In the past, the start has been upgraded speakers and an amp. Is the HHR amp adequate to support upgraded speakers? The subwoofer is barely noticeable. Is there something that fits into the same space that has more kick?

I deadened the doors and most of the other panels I could get to. I then replaced the Amp with a 4 channel and a bridged mono amp. Finally I replaced all the speakers including the sub. When I replaced the sub I took the stock box out and used more deadening material to seal it from the inside and outside.
