2.0 Timing Chain Problem at 61,000 Miles?
My SS just threw P0016 & P0017 codes from one start to next, and I now have a new ticking sound under the hood. Hard to believe it's the timing chain with only 61,000 relatively easy miles, but all the P0016/P0017-related threads I've read seem indicate the timing chain needs to be replaced or maybe the tensioner if I'm lucky. Thoughts?

Better check it out. You could pull the valve cover to see if there's slop in the chain. It might be obvious, "I better not start this engine again". If you look and still aren't sure, you would need to pull the timing cover. It could be a broken guide, or guide bolt, and/or the tensioner may have run out of travel.

There are a couple of "if you are lucky" items:
Correct clean engine oil wiring for the VVT valves and the crankshaft sensor But the new ticking pretty much dooms you. |
Thanks for your responses. You guys confirmed what I already knew but didn't want to admit--I'm hosed.
I plan to pull the valve cover today to see what I can see. FWIW, I always used Mobil 1 5W-30 and change at 20% or 5,000 miles which ever comes first. Last oil change was over 1000 miles ago. |

OK. I removed the valve cover and here's what I found. Comments?

Yep timing chain slack, a new kit from Cloyes 94201SX and one of these
|
Never saw the chain on this engine. From what I see it must mate up to the top guide to be correct.
|
It should be closer to the top Guide, the P0016 indicates the chain has jumped a tooth

Already filling up a cart with parts including that guide bolt. Figure I might as well replace the balance shaft chain and water pump while I have access...or maybe not. What say you? I haven't run across any videos of the SS 2.0 timing chain replacement. So, is there anything different regarding the VVT cam gizmos that I need to be aware of? It appears that I cannot use the Cloyes timing kit with sprockets (94201S)? Anyway, thanks for the guidance. |
It is the same procedure as 2.4L and 2.2L VVT.
Before you buy a lot of parts I would get the chain cover off and make sure it is not just a broken guide, that would save lots o'cash. At 61K I would not worry about the water pump or the chain. There was an upgraded oil spigot, I'm not sure when that happened. It usually comes in the chain kit. It might be the same kit as a 2.4L, nott sure about that. Inspect the sprockets, The book says to use new sprocket & crank bolts, Any visible slack is too much. |
