Broken Shift Cable
 

Okay, so today, I go to leave work, and find myself with a broken shift cable. Does anyone happen to know the part number for the cable that controls front to back movement for a 5-spd SS? I know a few people have had problems with the cables, just curious if anyone had a number for me. Need to order one, since HHRs aren't exactly common in England.

Posted here as well as Drivetrain section for a little extra exposure. I only have a couple weeks until I need to have my MOT inspection done (WAS going to get it done Monday), but now I need a cable to have a hope of passing an MOT.

wonderful. Well, at least I have a part number. I am gonna go broke just trying to make my car legal to drive here...just got ripped off by the auto hobby shop on base for $450 (aka flat rating me for a lighting conversion i did most of before leaving MS), now another $100+ for my shifter problem...at least this is one i can do the work myself, pretty quickly, so long as i can get the part in quick. thanks 843de.

Thanks QC. I look forward to getting to drive the thing, hopefully trouble free, as my last 4 years have been! Oh, there's a shy IBM SS here too...it shows it's face once in a great while. I was pretty mad too, I wanted to be the first (and only) on base haha. 843de, I've already been hooked up with a parts guy and will hopefully have it ordered within the hour. No problem Yonash, sorry to hear you're stuck in MOT hell, my friends in Suffolk love to regale me with horror stories.

If anyone in the U.S. and Canada would like to gripe about their DOT's, just move to Europe, its astounding what they make people go through.

Well, just realized I forgot to report back! Part came in this past Monday, and a friend of mine and I went to town. More or less a pretty easy job. The things that slowed us down was that little bitty 10mm nut just outside the body grommet that secures the cable in place so it doesn't pull against your nice sealed grommet, as well as trying to get the ball sockets on the cable ends to let go of the linkage on the transmission. THAT, is not a simple chore haha. With enough pulling, they'll come free, but it's not a lot of fun. I suppose that's good though, we know they won't just arbitrarily pop off one day while driving!

Car drives great, she passed her MOT with flying colors, and I should be getting Euro plates and my tax disk real soon!

I think it's great you have your SS in England.

We live in the U.S., but spend a lot of time working in Continental Europe, some of it in the UK.

If I was there just a little more time I would ship my SS to either Paris or London.

I can't think of a better, more fun car for the area as the SS is narrow, but has a lot of carry space, is fast but has good gas mileage and would be totally unique next to the small turbo diesels and the little Ford and Opel wagons.

I think it would be a hit.
