Dealer says its the direct injection unit. Damn it's loud. They installed the noise cover but it makes no difference.

I'm going to drive a BMW on Friday. I can't take any more of this GM made junk.

It's for sale.

Mine too has started this behavior just recently. It started after a bout with a bad thermostat and over heating. Every morning it sounds like a out of adjustment 'solid-lifter' engine. The noise seems to be located over the #1 & #2 cylinder/valve train area, rather than anywhere else in the engine bay. Even the fuel pump is quiet in comparison...
It will eventually quiet down once the engine reaches 120° - 130° as if someone flipped a switch.

It will also do it with a short stop at a store (20 - 30 min) then it will last only a brief moment or so.

And like Sneezy's... It has NEVER done this before!

Fill it up with Dex-Cool & Check the Gas

I've continued to have the loss of coolant issue, about every 100 miles or so I've had to add coolant to the tank (just over a gallon in the last month and a half). Then, just the other day the check engine light came on. Today, I took it back to the dealer. After butting heads with the Service Advisor, I was able to get with the mechanic after he retrieved the codes. The codes revealed issues with the valve train and cam timing solenoids.

He later sent me a picture of a water bottle that contained some oil (sic)... He let me know that #2 & #4 cylinders showed evidence of coolant intrusion. That was before he started draining the oil and took the sample that contained a half and half mixture of Dex Cool and Mobil 1.

Basically, each morning when I started the engine, the water had settled to the bottom of the oil pan and that slimy mixture is what was 'lubricating' the valve train until it had cycled enough oil/water mix to satisfy the lubrication needs of the VVT system and lifters. After which, it would run and sound normal. Apparently, I have not been burning as much coolant as I've been storing in the crankcase. The dip stick did not show evidence of water, given that I had always checked it in the morning after the water had had a chance to settle to the bottom of the pan the night before. The level on the dip stick was tuff to make out that it was over filling. Looking on the dip stick, the bottom was obvious it was full (I had just changed the oil), but on the 'wire' section in between it just looked like residual from pulling the stick out the tube.

Now the issue will come down to what should be replaced and what will they replace...
The head and valve train seem to be an obvious start, but what I'm more concerned about are my connecting rod and main bearings not to mention the turbo's bearing(s).
Initially, I'm hoping for a new engine to alleviate any future issues related to lubricating my turbocharged engine with Dex Cool...

Replace Half an Engine & Check the Oil

As the saga continues, I'm getting a complete new head to include camshafts. The head had warped and allowed coolant into the cylinders. The mechanic said the turbo was alright, but have not heard anything about the rod and main bearings... Here's hoping...

Usually a warped head is the result of overheating to the extreme. How hot did yours get ScroogeSS?

I'm sorry, I've managed to start my story in one thread and finish it in this one...

If you see https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/ss-specific-service-issues-repairs-61/oil-radiator-43504/ post #9, you responded the in the next post. Thank you for your input. The mechanic found a tech bulletin on my symptoms that included pulling the plugs and inspecting the cylinders...

Then the story went from there. I'm still waiting for the final word or when it will be done. I'm happy that the head and complete valve train is being replaced, but still concerned about the turbo and the lower end bearings.

Actually I was responding to 1900colt in that thread. Notice his quote above my response.

My question here was: How hot did yours get?

Almost back in one piece!

Alright my goof, the real story began at: https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/ss-specific-service-issues-repairs-61/overheating-29601/ post #103...

I physically saw 249 at one brief instance before pulling over and shutting it off for a while. But the statement of cooling system operation found at AllData about the fan running while over 284 and having 12 volts available for 3 minutes disturbs me most, because that actually happened!

The mechanic sends me picture updates ever so often. The last one shown my head and intake manifold was back in place. I'm going to let him be for today and get with him tomorrow for the final word(s)...

No problem on the goof. Heck, I can't remember my own posts from a month ago. My wife says I have that "old timers disease".

Nice to hear they're getting your car fixed. It sure sounds like it hit that extreme heat range.
