what is procedure to change struts on a 2008 ss?

 

The are really you got what you see. You take the old ones off and put the new ones on, if you get the Quikstruts. Check the Torque settings. Nothing special, the Quikstruts come with everything including springs.

 

Dont think they make QS for the SS..

 

If you're not familiar with the procedure, look on Youtube. There are a number of generic videos that show how to change struts.
The HHR SS is a very easy car to change the struts on if you have a good spring compressor tool.

 

Several suppliers on Ebay says they are the same for all trim levels Monroe # 172179L & 172179R. Just repeating what I read, no direct experience.

The photo shows QS, but the description is "Chevrolet Cobalt HHR New Front Complete Shock / Strut & Coil Spring + Mounts x2" $180 Unity (chinese) brand collision parts. But, then they also claim All Cobalt and All HHR. And oddly states "excludes Cobalt SS". Grains of salt are needed here.

GMPartsEast lists complete strut kits in FE1, FE3 and B2E flavors, pretty reasonable prices without checking on shipping rapes, er rates.

 

All the after market common brands say this..not true..its a one size fits all scenario..There are no direct replacement shocks for the SS..except from GM...and there-in lies the problem. Cut up the originals for Konis or go coil over..Thats your only choice.

 

Woody is right. Only FE5 for the ss from a GM source. Otherwise $-$$ to upgrade.

 

So that's the deal? Order them from GM SPO? Any other items I would want to replace as long as I'm doing that? (Bushings; tower components). Thanks!

 

I would since it's a 08 the top bushings, swaybar bushings, and endlinks. They all have a history of failure.Might as well get a clean new start. The moog endlinks are greasable.
