GMTU Issues...grrrr...
GMTU Issues...grrrr...
First off would like to say hello and was hoping my first post wasn't going to be about any issues. I just picked up my '09 SS 3 weeks ago. Since it didn't have the GMTU, I ordered it from Crate Engine Depot. I scheduled it to be installed on Monday. Well Sunday night I hit a deer. Didn't do a whole lot of damage and the the intercooler and hot/cold piping was still intact and was pressurizing to 20psi.
So Monday morning I take it in to the shop and they do the install. I take delivery of the car and get on it, only 5psi in all gears and a check engine light. I turn around and take it back and ask if the tech loaded the new calibration. The service manager says yes and that the ecu is still learning the new parameters and that he'd clear the code (P0236). So I take it and still only 5 psi in each gear...but I had to get it to the body shop for a estimate.
That evening I play around with the manifold map sensor and take it for a drive. I only had 5 psi in 1st but at least 16 psi in 2-5. So I'm thinking the tech didn't remove the boss on the lower map. So I pull that and sure enough he didn't. So I took care of that issue. Still only 5psi in 1st and 16 psi in the rest, but the wastgate/recirc seems to be acting funny, it would surge to 3-4 psi and vent about 3 times in a row and then it would act normal. So I pull the codes again and I had P0106 and p0299 codes pending. I cleared those and went for a drive. Still 5 psi in first and 16 in the rest. But when I got on it the prd display would say no data. So I had more pending codes. When I would clear those on the fly the display would come back.
So last night I get in the car to go the grocery store and before I left I cleared all codes (about 6 different powertrain codes). Finally I felt how this thing is supposed to feel, 26psi in 1-5! Amazing. Then I shut it off to go into the store and when I come back to take off, only 5psi in every gear! Clear the codes and back to 5psi in 1st and 16 in the rest.
I'm thinking the tech loaded a new calibration, but not the correct one. Pretty sure its not the wiring since its the plug and play version of the kit. I'm going to order the ZZP hot/cold pipes to eliminate any chance of boost leak.
Do any of you have any thoughts on this?

Welcome to the site Motorbreath. If they couldn't even read the directions to install your stg-1, I don't have a lot of faith in the dealer. I would take it back to them and ask them to reflash. How many miles does the car have ?
Wouldn't think the ECU would need to do any learning after the new calibration was loaded. But maybe......
Anyone else had INSTANT success after a GMTU install?
Oh, and welcome. You WILL get answers from others on this forum.

Unless your SS is a Christine like mine, it has done many weird things, like boosting 29 when I installed the hot side and intercooler, with just stg-1 tune.
BTW that was one of my favorite days I have owned it.

As far as I know these aren't adaptive ECU's. It should work with the flash. I'm going to have them reflash it. If I had a Tech 2 and the cal I would have just done the whole thing myself. It seems every time I let a dealer do anything to save me time, it gives me a huge headache and costs me time. It's got 33k on the odometer. Worked great with the stock tune and was really looking forward to the GMTU. I specifically got the plug 'n play harness' just so they couldn't f@#* anything up and I almost took the boss off myself, but thought, nah they can handle this. Yep this is what I get for thinking...lol.
It's so weird you can be at 1/4 throttle with about 4psi and the recirc opens. It never did that on the stock tune. Then it usually has the P0236 code pending and will only go to 5psi. So there is either something wrong with the GM cal or possibly one of the TMAP's is lazy.

The injectors and High Pressure pumps will make some clicking noise in a Direct Injection engine.
Keep in mind you are not just dealing with 25 PSI injectors as you fuel pressure into the engine is in the 1,000 PSI pluse range. It takes a lot of pressure to inject fuel in the cylinder a 23 PSI.
