HHR SS Fan Control Module

Hello!

My car: 2008 HHR SS manual, 127K miles. Suddenly have high coolant temp (237F peak with key off, on 90F day with A/C on in stop/go traffic). Fan not working at all.

I am not a GM/Cobalt/HHR wizard or a GM guy but I am an automotive engineer and an ASE-certified mechanic, so I'm not a complete dummy either. I'm just a guy who owns and likes this car and I do all my own work.

As best I can tell, the factory part is ACDELCO 25845280. $150 online, $250 for me local, special order overnight, no returns. Looks like the SS is a different unit than the slower HHRs.

Has anyone been down this road before? I have +12 to the input of the module, and the fan runs fine off of direct +12 with no module in the middle. Thus why I am questioning this module. I have ZZP tuned PCM as well as stock, so I have also tested two PCMs, and neither can make the fan work since a few days ago.

Any thoughts? Else, I leave this info here for the next guy. Will update when I solve it.

The module is a common failure. There are several threads about it.

Used to be you had to buy the entire assembly, now evidently you can the module only.

Here is one result from "ss fan".

...just curious if your a/c is functioning without the fan working. My a/c isn't working and I realized that the fan only turns on (slowly) at coolant temp of 196 degrees. Seems like your description indicates that your a/c IS working, even though the fan is not (thursday my car will be getting treated to a device that can turn on/off individual relays and such in hopes of figuring out why fan's not working and why compressor doesn't engage).

Best of luck - please update us!

Several have had this similar issue, most likely the module as you have shown by illuminating it and confirming the fan works!

Any mysterious coolant loss??

I had 2 of that module fail on my SS. I was thinking about installing a switch/relay to power the fan at least for a temporary fix if it happens again.

I log in almost never, but I started this thread that ended up closed due to pissing match between other posters, before I could ever post a solution: https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/ss-s...-module-57382/

I can confirm that the fan control module for my 2008 HHR SS 5-speed (and perhaps all of them?) appears to be nothing more than a priced-up version of the fan cooling module used in the ubiquitous "Panther" platform Ford Crown Victoria. I've been running one I got from eBay for 5 years/40K miles ....
