HPFP End of Life Tell-Tale
 

Is there a tell-tale that the high pressure fuel pump is near end of life? We know the timing chain is about done when we detect cold startup rattle. Is there something similar for the HPFP? My chain is pretty new, but I stuck my head under the hood the other day and might have heard my HPFP rattling on startup. The pump has nearly 200K miles on it. The engine runs fine and has no CEL, but I don't want to get caught off-guard and stranded.

That rattle is likely the phasers and not the pump.

I'm fairly sure the noise came from the #4 region of the engine, not #1 by the phasers. I could be wrong though.

Nevertheless, I'm curious if there is any tell-tale that the HPFP is near end of life.

I don't have an RPD, but would be interested in buying one for a great steal! :wink:

The car has a sensor and will know if the fuel high pressure is low even if you don’t have an RPD.

You could run a good bluetooth dongle and the Torque app on your phone or tablet. Should even be able to do some things the RPD can’t. Should be a real ELM327 or better, crappy clones will run too slow to give good really-time data.

I have the RPD and still use an old phone dedicated to OBD apps, and an OBDLInk LX.

Agreed. But I was curious if there were any early warning signs, so I can avoid getting stranded one day.

Exactly what app do you use? I looked in my iPhone App Store, but couldn't seem to locate one called "torque," unless I missed it.

I think "torque lite" is Android only unless something changed. But there should be others search "obd".
