Replaced the HPFP and now I have a no start condition.
 

I was running along at 60 mph and the engine shuddered three times and I immediately lost 80 % power. The dic displayed the low power mode. I limped back home and I had P0087 & P0089 codes. After checking the threads in this forum, I concluded that the HPFP must have gone bad instantly. The HHR has run almost flawlessly for 100,000 miles. The car sit for five days waiting for a fuel pump to be delivered form ZZPerformance. After all this time sitting the battery went completely dead. I cleared the codes, installed the new fuel pump with the instructions from Alldatadiy and charged the battery. Now my engine turns over but the engine will not start. The fuel pressure is 10lbs according to the Torque software. My in tank fuel pump is supplying fuel to the HPFP. The HPFP from ZZPerformance is suppose to be a new takeoff according to ZZPerformance and I purchased from them mainly because of price and other HHR SS owners recommendation's. I think that I have a bad new/used HPFP. I was better off with the crippled fuel pump if that was the problem. Any ideas?

If you've only got 10psi fuel pressure, sounds more like the in tank pump is bad.
Did you do any fuel pressure tests when the trouble started ? Hope you didn't buy the HPFP just based on the codes and other peoples problems.

FWIW. My SS sits a lot. Sometimes 5-10 days without being started. Never fails to crank right up.
You may need a new battery or you have a voltage drain. You might want to check into that.

How in the world did you find P0097 has any relation to the fuel pumps? That is a problem with the intake air temp sensor #2.

I guess both sensor wires could be shorting somewhere.

Could be the battery was low to begin with.

The in tank pump should supply about 150PSI.

You are of course right. I have been researching so many resources that I have gotten a jumble of trouble codes floating around in my head. The codes that I had were p0087 & p0089. The fuel pump pressure to the HPFP is 70 lbs. The fuel rail pressure is holding at 8.7lbs with the new HPFP. I have seen the fuel rail pressure over 800 lbs. I have called ZZPerformance but no one will answer and you have to wait for them to call you back. A lesson learned, do not purchase from a vendor when you have to wait for the vendor to call you back!

Just a thought, can you put the old pump back on and try it? It'll give you some proof

I have the old pump on the vehicle now and I am getting the same result's. When the problem started last Saturday I was able to get back home in low power mode. I was able to start the vehicle two more times. The third time I started the vehicle it barely started and sputtered and shut down and would not start back up. I am not sure what putting the old pump back own is telling me. It seems to me that a lot of vehicles with the p0087 & p0089 codes are having to replace the HPFP. I cleared the codes and the codes have not returned. Could a weak battery cause this condition.

The thing is the HPFP is mechanical, BUT it has electrical controls for varying the pressure. It runs off of 3 lobes on the camshaft the electronics control which lobes to use for the demanded fuel pressure.

As I said earlier the in tank pump should supply around 150 PSI not 70 PSI

Don. Question. I always thought the in tank fuel pump pressure was supposed to be around 60-80 psi. You stated it should be 150 psi ?
Is that a SS specific thing ? Maybe you could clarify this.

(my SS repair spec files are still stuck in my old frozen up PC. :cry: )
