Modules aren't wear items. It takes an external insult to damage them. (Or corrosion...) You're doing the right thing checking everything before putting the new one in. Good chance there is something wrong. Don't get tempted to put the new one in until you at least look hard. (Acknowledging the fact that you other car's module survived as a good sign.)

Any chance the car has audio mods?

Agreed, there should be an external reason. Bosch doesn't make junk, typically. I'm rebuilding the engine, so it's an excellent time to inspect everything as best as I can before putting the new ECM in.... No mods at all, the car is 100% stock, even the stupid turbo heat shield...
