Timing Chain
 

I have a noise in my engie that sounds like a slight growl. Took it to the dealer and they said my timing chain or chains need replaced. Has anyone had a problem with this. I have about 106K on this motor,2.0 turbo Seems kinda earily for a chain replacement.

very early...i'd get a second opinion. what kind of driving do you do?? hwy or city?

Welcome to the site, codered3232. You must drive a lot, I do and i only have 60k on mine.

Your mileage sounds about right for a timing chain install. Moving parts only last so long, and it would be wise to do it now. As the ole saying goes, "Pay me now-or pay me more later" "Moon"

As luck would have seems you are just out of warranty!!!

I think your Timing Chain diagnostic is Correct. But won't hurt to get a second Opinion.

BUT If you wait until it goes completely, you WILL be Fixing ALOT more parts on your Engine and Head. :duh:

When I first bought my 2.4 Panel, I asked my Mechanic about these Ecotec Motors and he told me they are a pretty good motor.

But at around 100,000 miles you WILL want to do the Timing Chain. As the timing chain Stretches, the timing chain tensioner keeps tension on it, but after so much Stretching, it can no longer keep enough Tension on it and it starts slapping around making the noise you hear. And it Will end up Failing because of the lack of proper tension.

He told me thats about really the only thing you MUST watch out for and to do it BEFORE it goes, or you'll be looking at a much more Expensive repair.

If the chain Breaks while your running the motor, 9 times out of 10, you Will be replacing BENT Valves. I forget if he said there would also be Cam damage or not, i'd have to ask him again, it was about 2 years ago we had talked about it.

Get the work Done ASAP. And save yourself from the added engine Damage. ;)

Do a search on YouTube for, timing chain ecotec engines and listen to see if it's the noise you are hearing. Do a Google search as well and you will find some "How To" on changing it yourself.

I think it is a little early for a TC, but being on an SS--- A&P X2.

A.S.A.P. X 3.....like get it done yesterday, if that chain fails, just plan on replacing the engine....it'll be cheaper than rectifying the damage if it goes.

This is interesting to see people state that 100K is right for changing a timing chain. The point of the chain is to not need to replace it like timing belts. Or atleast that is my understanding.

I can say that I have two ecotec engines and one has almost 140K without issue from the chain. Also I did not notice any interval schedual for chain replacement in either cars manual. Can any of you point out where GM says to change the CHAIN at any required/recommended intervals?

I just had mine replaced at the dealership last week. Told me that low oil levels caused the chain to stretch and broke one of the plastic chain guards because it was loose and flapping all over. It made more of a clicking noise though. Not sure either how the car was suddenly low on oil as i changed it less than 1500 miles ago and the car had just broken 50,000 a few days before i took it in.
