white smoke on decel
white smoke on decel
When I go over half throttle and let off when cruising car blows white smoke and exhaust smells hot like catalyst is plugged? Thinking turbo might be bad, checked intake side of turbo and impeller had quite a bit of endplay. Just trying to figure this thing out.
A little info such as year, model and mileage would help.
Fwiw. Burning oil will "kill the cat" so to speak. What's your oil consumption rate and how long has this been occurring ?
Surprised that you'll don't have a couple CEL codes popping up. Or do you ? Have you checked with a code reader yet ?

Yes, whopper is correct, e-mail addresses as Usernames are bad MoJo.
And to second George, the year, mileage, and any OBD II Codes if your CEL is illuminated would be super helpful.
To me it sounds like a turbo failure, but it could be more, white smoke can also indicate coolant getting into the cylinders.
Some diagnostic detective work is required.

No, that's really funny.
If you're feeling end play with the turbo shaft I think you may have found your issue. Since the turbo bearing area has oil and coolant around it you might want to consider getting it fixed before you have more problems than white smoke on decel

yea. my brother had one go on his cat powered Peterbilt. The bearing went out at which point the seal went out and it oil pump pumped ~ 4 quarts of oil into the intake tract before he go it shut down. That is how you have run away diesels.. just need a fuel source, doesn't matter if it diesel fuel or hot engine oil if it will ignite the engine will run.
For those who don't know, a diesel doesn't have a throttle body, it how much fuel you feed it that creates the power and regulates the RPM. So when it runs away you have to either cut the fuel supply of block the air flow or you have a big boom
