Best Tires for handling in snow?

I live in Pa and drive up and down mountains every day. The car handles well most of the time, but once the snow starts to fall, not so much. I believe it's the low profile tires so I want to get some that will perform better in these conditions. Which tire are the best for this but won't break the bank?

If you need snow tires, I would look at the General Altimax Arctic, Firestone Winterforce , or Michelin X-Ice. If you need all season tires, the Continental ExtremeContact DWS, Kumho 4X, and Goodyear Eagle GT look to be you're best bet. Any winter tire will beat the best all season tires in snow and ice. I didn't how much a difference winter tires made until last year when I bought them for my wife's car, it turned a front wheel drive car into a 4x4. Seriously, the braking and handling improved 100% on snow and ice, the ABS was coming on all of time with the all seaon tires and I had to try to get the ABS to come on with the winter tires.

I'm sure you'll get some folks stopping by with their recommendations on snow tires, but give the "Search" function a try up in the toolbar at the top of the page.

Some of the favored snow tires here include...

Bridgestone Blizzak
Michelin X-Ice
Hankook Winter i-Pike
Goodyear Eagle Ice

I like my Blizzaks and my daughter likes here Firestone Winterforce tires on her Extreme Blazer. Just had my son switch over my tires last weekend and now it is raining like crazy and they are forecasting snow, good timing.

I'm using BFG traction T/A M&S 215x55x16. Good all round tire for most conditions up here in Ontario Canada. Evacuate the water effectively without giving up control. I live in the country near Peterborough Ontario and we've had a copule of tester snowfalls alleady. The BFG's did OK but are a little wide for slushy situations. Answer = SLOW Down and let the big dogs eat into the slush. Haven't tested them in a real heavy snowfall yet. But by January I should have some info on 12inch drift's of blown snow to feed back.

my daughters Extreme Blazer has 255 55 16 General Grabbers on it when she bought it last year and the first dusting of snow she could not move, so I found some steel 15" wheels and the 215 70 15 Winterforce tires and she can not believe the difference. It is lowered 2" and she has not had any problems with the Winterforce tires. Definitely a lot safer. It is snowing tonight so we will see what it is like in the morning.

Welcome to the site mlphi715, and guz. Weather sounds a little rugged up there. I got great traction last Dec up in Edmonton, with Eagle F1 as.
