Goodyear Eagle GT vs. Sumitomo?
Hello all,
I am having a difficult time making a decision on the replacement tires I will soon purchase for my '06 2LT. It has the original Firestone Firehawk GTAs w/ 47,000 miles, & it is time to make a purchase. I have narrowed it down to 2 different tires, one being less expensive (but highly rated) & the other being slightly more expensive. I was going to go straight for the Goodyears, but there are many reports of rapid wear on these tires. I wanted to see if people have experience with the Eagle GTs on the HHR & how well they wear/noise/etc. The two tires are linked here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....T&autoModClar= http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....T&autoModClar= :thumb: |
I bought the Goodyear Eagle GT All-season tires just this past summer and I like them alot.

Hey Jeremy,
The Sumotomo's didn't have a survey rating and the Good Years didn't do well in the Winter survey! We just purchased a set of these Yokohamas: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....&autoModel=HHR LT&autoModClar= Check out there survey rating as they are near the top in every catagorey! We only have 1,000 miles on ours but I think you would be happy with them on your HHR! Also you might consider going to an 225 x 50 x 17...... Best-O-Luck :thumb:, |
Love my Goodyear Eagle GTs enough to have two sets, 225/55R16" on the Euromax and 225/50R17" on the factory 2LT wheels. Both sizes are quiet, ride nice (16's are smoother of course) and handle like crazy, wet traction is great too. Dry handling and traction was better than the Dunlop Direzza that came on the Euromax wheels when I bought them and they were not in bad shape.
I haven't had them in snow yet but they are rated decent for snow and have to be much better than those stock Firestones were...... :skull: |
I second the vote for Yokohama Avids. I had a set on my Catera and they were by far the best all around tire I have ever owned. Very good handling, excellent in rain and snow, great ride, and reasonable wear. My dad has the car now and they still look nearly new with about 40k miles on them.
For the HHR I opted for Kelly Springfield Navigator Touring Gold. So far they are nearly the equal of the Yokos. I've had them for about 5 months. I highly recommend them. I personally have owned several sets of Goodyears. I'm not impressed for what they cost. The Yokos and the Kellys cost about the same as the Goodyears, and from my research and experience they are better tires. |
I've got about 10K miles on the Eagles and have no complaints with them.
I have no experience with that particular Sumitomo. |

I just had Michelin HydroEdge tires installed on my HHR about a month ago. They are very good tires, and are rated excellent in all categories on the online survey. Plus, they have a 90,000 mile tread life warranty. I am very happy with them so far.

I got my wifey a set of Yoko Avids for her Mopar Avenger SXT, what a major Improvement over the OE Bridgestones...Much improved in all categories. I did choose the Yoko Avid TRZs', mainly because I did not want directionals for her car.... |
I have to ask this - do you plan on parking your HHR during the winter months or are planning on driving it in the snow and ice. If you are planning on driving it in the winter – Then I would suggest staying away from Ultra High Performance tires. They are great in the spring, summer, and early fall when it is dry or wet. But come winter - hang on to your seat. They both say "light snow" traction. I would either stick with a good Performance All Season tire or get an extra set of rims and buy a set of Winter Snow tires. Happy Hunting.
