At 33,000 miles - the 215/50R17 Firestone Firehawks on my car are completely shot. I am looking for something with good wet traction - which the OEM tires never did. (My car, with the manual trans - did not have Stabilitrak)

I would also like something that looks good - like a unidirectional tire.

I had Nitto NT450's on a Mazda Protege, that I loved. But they do not make the tire in my size.

I need help and advice from my HHR brothers and sisters.

I got Michelin HydroEdge tires a couple of months ago. They are very good in the snow and the rain. I was driving on ice the other day, and they performed really well. They are rated Excellent in all categories of the review on TireRack. They were $633.00 out the door for me, but I feel like it is worth it. They also have a 90,000 mile tread life warranty. Whether or not I'll get that out of them is hard to say. I think they look pretty good too. The tread is diagonal looking/V-shaped for better traction. I am sure there are other good tires out there as well, but this is what I have now and I like them! Good luck finding some nice tires!

I think I'd go with the HydroEdge tires based on your location in the snow belt. I just put new Michelin's on my HHR today(yesterday now)and they were my second choice after the Primacy's. If I were back in snow country I'd like the extra bite of the HydroEdge tires.

I have had great luck with the Cooper CS4's I put on my car. You are correct that the Firestone's were awful. Loud, poor in the wet weather, tracked poorly, etc. The Coopers are wicked quiet, rated for 60,000 miles, and great in the rain.

I like the new Goodyear Eagle GT...... Good enough to have two sets. I have the 225/55R16 on the Euromax 612 and 225/50ZR17 on the 2LT polished alloy factory wheels. Both sizes ride and handle great wet or dry. Aggressive tread design with a nice square corner.

Conti DSW's should be on everyone's top 3 list to consider. Tire Rack testing and customer reviews sold me. I've never had such a high performing tire on any car I've owned. They're all they are hyped up to be. Chicago area's first snow yesterday proved it.

I've always been partial to Continental tires.Get excellent wear. Currently have a set on my Explorer, for quite a while. Hardly show any wear at all after 2 years,and they ride real quiet.
