larger rear tires only

Since a hhr is front wheel drive "will larger dia. tires in back only" effect the m.p.h reading or have any adverse effect? !6" stock up front and maybe 20"s in back. My theme has been the hot rod look or roadster's. Do not want the slower pickup with 20's up front. Have made ALOT of mods. and this will be the last one. Want to go to a 235 width tire in back too. Thank's for any of your thought's guy's. Kelldog

i'd input on this topic, but i don't know a whole lot about tires and widths. at least all the technical stuff about em. hopefully some one will chime in soon to answer your question.

There are VSS (vehicle speed sensors) in each of the 4 wheels. They are used for delta (wheel speed difference) detection in both the ABS and TCS systems. Too big of a diameter may well cause issues. Try to keep F & R diameters close to each other and you shouldn't have problems.

Handling would also be a little different.

As far as the ABS and traction control sensors go they don't determine your speed on the speedo. That sensor is located on the transmission. Due to a flat I have driven my HHR with stock wheels up front and 20's on the rear and never had a problem. Was driving that way for only a couple of weeks though. I have a 5spd (no TC) and no ABS either. Just my :2cents:.

Once the EBCM (electronic brake control module) sees a big enough difference in wheel speeds it will turn on your abs and traction control lights if you have those options. I had a p.o.s olds in the shop the other day that had 4 different size tires on it and that thing had all kinds of ABS codes.

How would large size rear tires affect handling of the HHR?

No TC or ABS on the HHR I purchased. I thought it odd for it has upgraded radio, chrome package, roof rack, 2.4L engine and auto. The HHR was deliverd that way to the dealer. I look at it as being one less technical/electrical/mechanical thing that can go wrong with the car down the road.

My last car had TC and ABS which may have come in handy when I lived in the snow belt, but now I'm in sunny Florida...no snow. The one + with ABS was that it showed me when my tire got low air and that light would pop on. Lousy chrome job on the wheels from GM and the bead would continually leak.
