New Member New Tires

Hi All-

I'm brand new to the group, although been lurking for a while until I got
my '07 HHR 2LT with 215/50 x 17 tires. It has 43k miles and the tires will need to be replaced w/in 5k; it has the Firestone factory ones-horrible ride. I drove a LS model HHR, and the ride was much better-it had 215/55 x 16 tires and I believe the suspension has something to do with the ride too. I've been doing some reading here, and would like your opinions. I want a better ride, handling isn't all that important.

I'm considering going with 215/55, 225/50, or 225/55 sizes. I've tried the tire calculator, and if I go from 50 to 55 series in the 215 width, the overall diameter goes up by .85", which from what I've read should be safe-but I'm wondering if I'll notice a smoother ride with the taller tire. If I go to 225/55, the diameter goes up by 1.28". Will any of these sizes fit? I'm thinking of going with the 215/55 for a better ride, but what of the 225/55-would that give a still better ride? I have the stock alloy rims on the car.

Can anyone offer recommendations or experiences? From what I've read here, the tire I'm pretty much considering is the Kumho Solus. Which size might be my best choice for a more comfortable ride?

Thanks in advance!!

I have the same tires (Firestone 215/50R17). I just bought my HHR (28K) and had the tires/wheels rebalanced twice and still have a noticeable vibration at 60-65. I am thinking it is the tires.

I think the ride should improve going to a taller sidewall (50 to 55 series). I did a quick check and your actual speed will increase about 2 mph (speedo reads 60 and speed is 62). If you go to a 225/55 the speed increases to 63 mph). I am considering an all-season tire (something I can run year round). Please let us know what you decide and if there is any improvement. Good luck and welcome to the group!

IIRC, be careful going much over 26" tall tires, as the front struts may scrub..

You can do a "search" in the box above to the right to be sure..

I could no longer stand the noise and the wet weather traction from my Firestone tires 215/50/17. I did some research using the forum and trade publications. I opted for the Cooper CS4 Touring 215/50/17. They are responsive, great wet weather, look great, and they are QUIET!!!! Did I say they were QUIET!!!! I paid $556 at Tire Depot in Bristol,CT. Plus there is a $50 mail-in rebate from Cooper.
I will use Continental Extreme WinterContacts mounted on 15" steel wheels for the New
England winter. Narrowing the profile from a 50 to 65 series tire combined with the limited slip should make the HHR pretty awesome in the snow.
