Rim offset

It seems that the offset for HHR's is +42 and that rims for other cars will fit. The tire size on my 2009 LT is 215 50R17. The rims are 5 spoke steel, painted black. I can't seem to find these rims specific to my car. Most of the rims I have found for HHR's are the 16 inch variety. I have found 17/7 rims that fit Cobalts and other makes but the offset is +40. Would I be able to use these rims?

If your look like this, those are the 1LT rims, they came with a chromed plastic cover

the Cobalt rims will fit

+40mm offset will move the center of the tire outward 2mm, trivial but in a good direction.

I would avoid anything with more than +42. It would narrow the vehicle’s track.

Lots of successfully aftermarket setups use 8” wide rims with 35mm offset. This works fine with the optional 215/50R17 tires. 235/45R17 should work nicely too.

In case you’re choosing tire, this could help:

Yes, my rims are just like this one but have no covers.

Paint is a good cover! A set of nice lug nuts would be cool!

I was wondering if my tires would fit a 7 inch rim and surprised even an 8 inch would work.

I have 215/50R17 mounted to 8”. Didn’t even require a bead blaster. Looks good, handles well. Technically, might be too wide, but within reason, no one worries about that. If you go to the manufacturer’s website, you can probably find the exact official acceptable rim width range for each model and size of tire they make.

I mildly regret not going to a significantly wider tire, 245/45R17, but my wife wanted the stock size, and she has to drive it every day.

I can't find the 17" wheels except for one at Rock Auto. Those have an offset of +46mm so I guess that's out. They do have a silver rim that wouldn't match my wheels but no offset is specified. I don't suppose getting the readily available 16" would be an option unless I replace all four wheels and tires. I've tried salvage yards with no luck either. The 17" rims are hard to find, at least the ones that have the correct fitment.
