I finally got my new tires and rims on the HHR. I did replace my struts with new KYB struts. Not using any spacers or longer studs..... but it is a very close fit around the strut area. The tires does not rub anywhere, even when turning full left or right. The tires I mounted are 225/45/18. I might go back and add spacers and longer studs (if I can find some that will work).

Close like this ? My '08 Panel 2LT has this tight clearance on 26.1" tires. I run 225/ 50 / 17" tires.

225/45/18 is the same size that the HHR SS came with. Memory says that size specs to 25.97 inches.
Should be just fine. Although the ride quality may be a little stiffer now.

HHR wheels are 42mm offset (mostly. I think I remember one at 41mm.) The Solstice rims are nominally 55mm offset, so close to what you measured. That’s more than a 1/2” difference. I recall owners saying a .25” spacer works without modification to the lug bolts and works for the Solstice wheel, presumably without an excessively wide tire. While that still narrows the track of the car by slightly more than 1/2”, it’s better than over an inch without the spacers.

Yes. Exactly. Probably less clearance on the inside between the vertical portion of the strut and the tire.

Wow, keep an eye on inside of the tires, hard cornering could cause a slight rub that close on vertical
