Question Switching out aftermarket wheels and tires on HHR?

Hi Everyone

I picked up a panel. Car is very clean
There are some aftermarket wheels. I pulled one off and it's 17x7.5 with a 42 offset. Tires are 235/45/17
I went to tirerack and like that they can mount, balance and tpms everything, and all i have to do install them

I'm thinking about going with a 17x8 with a 40 offset. I definitely don't want any rubbing, but i'm thinking it will have the same distance from the hub as what's currently on the car
Am i safe going with 17x8 40? I would still go with the 235/45/17 tire. Can i even to to a 38 offset, which i assume would be closer to the fender as far as more of a flush look?

Thanks

Welcome to the site, measure two or three times, buy rims and tires once.

Unfortunately your response doesn't help
To purchase from tire rack to measure, and return 2-3 times would be such a hassle and so so so much time wasted
I'm looking to buy just once, which is why i asked the question before i buy

When you modify or change from the original equipment, it's hard to say what will "fit". Aftermarket wheels can have varying specs. Wheel thickness, offset and such just add to the guessing game.
Oldblue's advice is spot on since you don't give the exact wheel and tire manufacturer.
Buying from Tirerack is fine for a tried and proven size combo.

I’m sorry you miss read my response, you measure the dimensions of your car. Drum or rotor surface to the fender .
a 42 mm offset for the stock rim is not the same as a wider rim. There are other things to look into . I believe there is a wheel finder on the Tire Rack website.
Thanks measuring three times, buying once.

There's more to it than just looks. Here's an article https://www.lesschwab.com/article/wh...el-offset.html

Use an online calculator. It is part of how I won an autocross championship in 2010. You will have to get off your arse and take some measurements, but it's perfect. Measure many, buy once.
