Besides, you can get cheap brand new tires of the Korean made, "Mystery Brand" type for $45-$60 each in the 215/55/16 size.

They'll come with a warranty of some kind, you'll have the full tread depth to use up, and you'll know that they haven't been curbed or potholed like used tires...which can make them like ticking time bombs.

Plus, an HHR with 200,000 miles on it is far from knackered, says the guy with a 319,000 mile daily driver.
Yes, Do this. Please don't be a blowout waiting to happen. I know they cost $$ that you may not have, but be safe - your life is more important (even to me, hundreds of miles away) than a couple hundred dollars. I can only imagine that if you framed this discussion up for your loved ones, what they would say. It's your call, but think about it, OK?

Oh, and BTW, kudos to you 843DE for 319K!!! What an ambassador! (I know you don't need the attention, but still...)

We're just here to help, and occasionally offer nuggets of wisdom gained "the hard way".

Let us know what you end up putting under your fenders, your choice might just help someone else out too.

Just got them mounted today they were 215/60/16 on stock rims man they were close to strut perch but took them for a ride no rub at even hitting bumps , I was scared as hell but no problems turning or rubbing just put this out there to help other people but this is the limit on height .. I guess you learn something every day

I am currently looking at some Falken Sincera S211, they have 80,000 mile treadwear and 215-60X16s go for $62.58 each. Add $12 each to mount and balance.

I care only about $/mile, so other considerations don't matter.

For some reason 215-55X16 run about $10 each higher in most brands.

The tires don't care if you hit bumps, the distance between the axle centerline and the spring perch is fixed.

You are right on that I was not thinking .. More less was thinking of the springs moving up and down .. But your are right the perch stands still ...

Exactly! Some people don't seem to understand how the suspension works.

No.
Not even close. 265/70/17 is 31.6 inches. Over 5 inches too tall. Heck, I doubt they would fit inside the wheel well. That is a pickup truck size tire. Stick with the stock size.
Any tire over 26.3 inches will rub on the suspension.
