Tire Suggestions

I just purchased my wife an 07 2LT. It looks like the stock Firehawks are getting a bit thin. The car just flipped 29K. Any suggestions for good tire that will do ok in the snow and rain. I have looked at Hankook Ventus HRII, and Yokohama Avid V4S. They both really good but would like to get some more input/experiences with other tires in the rain and snow.

I have heard the Firehawks are loud but we are amazed how quiet this car is inside so as long as the tire is not an All Terrain tire, like my truck, I would think noise would not be an issue for these cars.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

I put Yokohama Avid's on my old Catera. By far, they were the best passenger car tire I have ever owned. Excellent in snow and rain, nice ride and decent handling capability for a non-performance tire. I will most likely put them on my HHR in the spring. The Firestones will have about 40k on them by then.

Thanks for the reply Doc. That's good to hear on Yokohamas. Living in Wisconsin I bet you have a lot of experience with snow :)

Anybody else.

My wife has an 07 2LT with over 40K miles on it and I am thinking the same thing. I have researched the Goodyear Assurance Triple treads and they sound really good, but would like to hear from others who have had them (sorry NOSbreather, didn't mean to thread jack)

I have the Triple Treads on the wifes 04 GTP and on my SS on steel wheels.

They have been great! I can say they are much better than the Comp TA radials that came on the GTP. They have had as good of grip, better wet and snow traction and much better wear as we got 55,000 miles out of the Triples and only 24,000 miles out of the Comps.

I used them on the SS last winter and went through everything with no drama. I even had been in snow that was deep enough to push it with the front air dam and not have any grip issues.

The only negitive is the Triples cost a little more but most of the better tires are in the same price range.

Note the Tirerack had been my best price and Goodyear has often been running a $40 rebate. Note they are going to raise their price in January 6% like most tire MFG. Prices are going up due to raw materials and the Goverment tariffs. Yes even tires not made in China will go up because of this. Only Like 4% of Goodyears tires are from China vs many others who ship more.

Another tire I am looking to go to on the SS later is the new Eagle GT. THis is a whole new tire and is very good in snow, rain and performance. The price is very good too. This is a top pick for a resonable priced all season performance tire. My buddy used them last winter on his Cobalt SS and they did not give him any issues in any of the harsh winter lake effect snow we get here.

Note please watch the speed ratings. You do not need a V rating. This jumps the price up fast. Stay with the lower rating and you will be fine under normal driving.

Just don't mess with the Goodyear RSA tires they are a very old design and tread life is not what it should be.

Ditto what hyper said. I took off the Firestone Affinity's with plenty of tread left & put on the Goodyear Triple Treads after owning my HHr for 2 months in Michigan winter. After 21 months and a tad over 42K miles they are still awsome. Rotating every 6,000 miles and rebalanced every other rotation I fully expect to get another 42K from them.

We have had great luck with BF Goodrich Traction TA tires. Had them on five cars so far. For the money they do a great job.

I think we would have gotten more miles out of ours but we both drive the GP hard at times and it does take some miles off.

My mom had the 16" Triple Treads on her LeSabre with the touring suspension. She saw near 70,000 miles before they needed changed. Mom does not take interchange ramps very hard nor brakes late. LOL!

I usally run 35 PSI in them and I have been getting even wear. Any less I think they may wear on the edges more at least on the front.

She wants them on her new Malibu once the 18" Eagle LS tires are worn out.

No worries on the thread esmarkey. As long as we can all get some good info back that is what it's all about. Thanks for the replies. I looked up the Goodyear Eagle GT's and they look pretty cool. I wonder if they make much noise? I'll call and see what kind of price my usual tire shop gets on them.

Any other input?

I've just started looking into replacing the firehawks in Spring as well. I'm also open to suggestions if i had to choose right now i would go GoodYear Triple.
