Can I put 225 70/16 on my HHR and not have any problems. This would be on stock 2006 rims. Thanks and Hello this is my first post. Stan

 

The 70 sidewall probably won't clear your wheelwell. I wouldn't go with anything bigger than 60.

 

The diameter of the tire size you're considering Stan is 28.4", the maximum diameter that can be fitted to an HHR without the inner sidewalls hitting the lower spring perch on the struts is 26"

As Tyler has already stated, 60 series sidewalls are the tallest that will usually work on the HHR, why are you considering such tall tires?

60's probably won't fit either, they would be 26.6 " which would rub the lower spring perch up front.....

225/55/16 fits fine.

 

215r60X15's do fit! but just there is some "touching" on the strut, but not damage to the tire, just polishing of the strut, does not even show on the tire. I do run 215r60X16 on my 2008 because it saves me at least $75 every time for a set of 4! I would not even try 225r70X16!

 

Hey Stan welcome aboard, way to go with a first question, besides when do you change your oil, what size tire, always brings lots of responces. I concur with those who say 26" is it, for height but there is room for argument on the width, these are 255 x40x18 and there is very little clearance anywhere. they are 26 tall and room for a credit card left.

 

That's the "polishing" I was talking about.

 

Donbrew, if you do a few burn outs they will stop polishing..... mine don't rub anywhere, it is very close, and they ride great, absolutely my fav tires.

 

A 215/60/16 is 26.1" diameter..... The 225's would be 26.6" which is the size I was quoting and would not fit. As far as "polishing" goes... if the metal is shiny that's contact no matter how slight. I'm not saying your tires are wrong, Don, but contact is contact and something I try to avoid.

Another problem when trying to recommend sizes for somebody else is that brands vary slightly in these measurements derived from a "calculator". Your brand "Y" tires in a 215/60 may just fit and a brand "X" of the same size may rub hard enough to cause damage. Also a performance profile versus a touring profile would cause more contact because of the squared edges of a performance tire...... Lot's of possible variables here. That's why we always say 26" is the cut off point for overall diameter. Yes a hair over 26" will fit, but for some people a theoretical "hair" might be 1/2 inch which would not fit the stock suspension.
