Go with the information provided by the sticker, rim width is measured from the inside edge of the beads, see the attached diagram for an example.

Hello pat hhr - what is the current size tire you have on your HHR???
The OEM tire size for that model with the 17 inch rims should be 215/50R17. A 215/50-17 size tire will fit rims with a width between 6 to 7.5 inches. Which makes sense if the tire sticker on your HHR states a rim size of 17x6.5 inches. However, the 245/45-17 tire that you wish to put on the OEM rim might just not work. A 245/45-17 tire will fit rims with a width of 7.5 to 9 inches. Your OEM rims are 1 inch to narrow to accommodate the 245/45-17 tire at the minimum rim width required. I would suggest if you want the 245/45-17 tires - buy new rims that have a wider cross-section to accommodate the tire you want. Best of luck |
It's 6.5, I've got the same rims. 245/45 would not fit. I've got 225/50 on mine, don't think I would try to go wider than that.

235 45 is it fit ?
thanks |
Doubt it.... recommended wheel width is 8.0-9.5 for a 235/45R17 Yokohama.... other tire manufacturers would be similar.
