Ok so I know that no one yet has a turbo kit for our cars and after driving my old Isuzu Impulse and hearing the "Pssshh" from the blow off valve I am really jonesing for that sound again. So, my 2 option poll. 1: priced out a Turbo kit and all parts would come up to $739.00 or 2: stick with natural aspiriation and buy a header ($250 apprx)...any input good or bad is appreciated. And I am not worried about my warranty that went away a long time ago. As for some back story, I have seen to new Ecotecs running about 8 psi boost and making close to if not over 200 horses at the wheels with stock internals. I am not looking to do anything more than that. Thanks again to you all!

Just a header with the stock exhaust?

Let's be realistic - add this to the poll: How many are willing to spend $4500 for a turbo kit? Because that is what STS's kit will run when it is released.

You can't just bolt a turbo on the HHR's Ecotec engine - some serious engine manegement has to be done and cracking the computer is what is holding everyone back.

It is going to take time...and money.

I bet that $739 doesn't include the cost of a re-cal of the ECM???

actually price includes the Apex'i Super AFC to trick the stock ECM and remap the fuel system. Have seen this on a yellow Turbo Cobalt and he has had no problems thus far. When making a custom system like I am trying to do I don't really are about the stock ECM recal since I am used to having to tune on the fly. One of my older cars was a 98 Mistu Eclipse GST and if you don't know how to tune a fuel map you shouldn't try to modify it. So, I was going to use this method since it has worked on a cobalt so far. Only thing missing is bigger injectors if I try for more than 8 psi boost.

One of my buddies who is a Fiero custom parts manufacturer is working on an HHR setup and he says he will piggyback a computer just for the turbo. He has successfully done this on many other vehicles. Of course, he doesn't know for the HHR yet but judging from his other installs I can guarantee that it won't be less than $3000.

$3K aint bad for a turbo. If a turbo doesnt come out by the end of the year I'm off to trade the HHR with a car that has turbo.

If everyone who really wants a turbo will simply call/write/email STS, we will see the HHR production kit a lot sooner. Right now the "squeaky wheel" gets the grease, and high horsepower applications are taking priority for them. The more HHR owners who bug them, the quicker it will become a reality.

Let's all do our part...

Whatever comes out first, turbo or SC, I am all over it. Both will create the power I want. The turbo would be a bit more fun though...
At least i have the exhaust system now to handle that!

No excuse other than lack of money to build that.
Reality and my grandiose ideas are two totally different things sometimes.

I think I am going to wait the 3 years til my warranty is up. Then I'm going to drop a SC V-6 in it, not 100% sure of that yet, but its on my mind. I know there will need to be some beefing up of the front end and the suspension. By then I'm sure the after market products for us will be plenty.

Finding a Turbo, and installing a functional Turbo are two different things. There`s a lot of thing/parts ,involved with a turbo, internally, externally, that even a co. like Garrett isn`t prepared to go out on the limb for, when the veh. is new like the HHR. Maybe in a couple years GM will get something that is RELIABLE for the HHR. Just sticking one on , won`t get you down the road any quicker, unless the tow truck pulling your veh. has one...

I have a Tubro Caravan, never driven a veh. with a Supercharger, but I think a Turbo is probably more fun. Like having another passing gear,ON DEMAND.

Turbo or not....I'm not sure what the protocall for the engine system is but I know that the body uses a HHR Specific Lan arcitecture for the stereo and some databus carried over for locks and security systems. So it is just going to take a bunch of time for all the aftermarket companies to decipher all the Unique issues with the HHR

I'm not sure I'd agree with that. My niece has a 1997 Mazda Millenia S which has a 2.0L V6 with an Miller Cycle supercharger. It was a factory package offered at the time. My sister and brother in law had no clue what they had given their 17 year old daughter! I drove that car and you want to talk about passing gear? Well it screams! And it's fun to drive in every speed range. No turbo lag, just punch it and it goes! My niece had the car taken away from her until she returns from college because she got a ticket for doing 110 on the 215 freeway. But back to the actual topic of this thread. No turbo kit or header for us since the HHR is my wife's daily driver and she's just not into the performance mods or mods in general. Now, if it were mine................;)

its possible to tune the car with an fmu fpr and injectors its not the greatest tune but people have been doing it for a while now.

Call me crazy, but I'm happy the way it is. I bought the HHR knowing it was a 4 banger, and it wouldn't have much on the performance side. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised when I took it for a test drive and it had good power and acceleration for what it is. I like the gas mileage and don't want to do anything to change that given the miles I drive to and from work everyday. I would like to enhance the performance with a CGS intake, or some other mods, but I can't see spending the money for a turbo kit.

Turbo All the Way!

Talking with Hahn and STS on time frame. Hard to tell on time.

Even Putting one together on ur own u arnt going to have a good reliable set-up for under 800.
Manifold: 100-150
Turbo: 500-600
BOV: 150
Piping: 150
Intercooler: 250
Fitings: 100-150
These are ur major pieces and that doesnt include labor, which most people are not gonna be able to do on there one with a custom kit. Plus doesnt include all the lil extra pieces you are gonna need to add here and there to make it safer. (turbo timer / boosts controller / injectors)

A good set-up with shopping around and good parts and doing the work yourself might run u a little less that 2 grand. Alot better to wait for a major company to shoot us a full kit with instructions for around 3500 that has been tested and has good R&D behind it.

have the BOV.. getting turbo and intercooler for around 125 plus some trade from my old turbo Isuzu.. don't need a mani if I use a rear setup... onlything that will be costly is Fuel management... Hopefully HPTuners comes out with their kit soon! They already have it out for the 2.4.... And after some shopping around I have less than $1000 for everything. Just takes some being creative. :D

This past week I watched the show RIDES. It was about 3 companies modifying the HHR. Darkside customization did put on a turbo on the 2.2L. Only they put it under the rear. This was due to limited space under the hood, and they got their car later then the other places.

Oh, was not sur of the make of the unit they used. But it was a great show. All the cars were really done nice.

Well I've talked to him before and basically, if he feels that he can handle the responsibility of boost as far as maintenance or if something breaks and if that money coming out of his pocket isn't going to effect his responsibilities in life, than go for it...

WHEN there is tuning capabilities. Untill then, it's just a dead end.

Now of course, his last resort is a standalone setup if he truely wanted to but that's more involved and another headache by itself.
