2.2 or 2.4?

Looks like I'm about to get a 2010 HHR. I looked under the hood and didn't see any stickers with the engine size on them. How do you tell which engine it has in it? My mom had an older HHR and there was a sticker under the hood that said that it was a 2.4.

Welcome to the site

There should be a decal on the hood. If it's not there I would suspect that the hood has been changed.

I would look for signs of body work.

To answer your question look in side the glove box. You will find a tag of rpo codes.

LE5=2.4
L61=2.2

check the RPO codes on the sticker inside the glove box, looking for the ones starting with L - ie these ones for a 2008:
L61 Engine, ECOTEC 2.2L DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder SFI
LE5 Engine, ECOTEC 2.4L DOHC 4-cylinder SFI

If yours differ, do a quick google search.

If the exhaust is stock the 2.2 has a regular exhaust outlet and the 2.4 has a larger chrome outlet. I use that for a quick reference, but the best place to check as mentioned before is the glovebox.

The larger Chrome exhaust is generally the clue but not always.

GM offers a exact look alike Parts Dept. accessory option and I have seen one on a 2.2L 1LT HHR.
It is a bolt on where the factory is a weld on.

Has anyone driven both the 2.2 and the 2.4 Is there really much/any practical difference?

I have driven both , but for short less than an hour runs.
Both seem very similar, to me

I have both and the 2.4 seems to be a bit quicker in passing and acceleration. There are a lot more 2.2 than 2.4 and finding a 2.2 engine around here is easy and cheap.

I know on my '06 if you take the air box off and look at the top of the cam cover it says 2.2 right there.

Of course when I first came here I though it had a 2.4 but was wrong.
