I'm confused too. After some investigation it seems that gm changed there engine vin code on hhr's after 08.

So I think 09 to 11 the engine code for the 2.2 is a w and the code for 2.4 is a u.

My advice would be to look at the under hood decal to be sure.

Am I misreading something? He said the engine was swapped and he wants to confirm what engine it is. If swapped, the VIN, build sheet, and decals under the hood won't mean a thing if a different motor was installed. Mind you swapping in a 2.2 for 2.4 or the reverse would not be worth the trouble with the problems associated with the swap, but if it was a hack job, anything is possible.

He could have had the air cleaner off by now and verified by looking.

Post No. 4. :) Phew - thought I was loosing it.

It would have been nice if he had mentioned it at the onset.

And it doesn't really say swapped in post #4.

The OP really needs to clarify this whole thing or we could be giving him some misleading info.

now that I re-read the initial posts-- sounds like the engine was a swap-- I do not see where he says what year his vehicle is,but he does say the engine is out of an '11....which leads me to believe replacement,so as mentioned vin's etc.,mean nothing--he is possibly looking for physical differences at a glance so he knows what engine he really has--or is there an engine number somewhere that he can reference if the two motors have no visible differences.... o.p.'s turn

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the big label on the end of the head with the UPC code. All those numbers tell you everything about the engine. Unless the engine has been steam cleaned, it's only paper.

The engine is not in a car,was going to buy it because it's a good deal. Car is wrecked and gone. Only has 30k on it. I have a panel 2.2 . thought I'd have a spare. thanks.
