P0449 Code

P0449 Code
The last few days I have had a solid, steady MIL on on the dash. I have a code reader and the fault is P0449, which is "EVAP emission control system vent vlv/sol Malfunction". I understand what this code is and what it means.
I usually take my out-of-warranty vehicles to a trusted local shop for repairs (too cold to do repairs at home now). My HHR has about 40K miles, so it's out of warranty.
However, since this is an emissions-related failure, isn't the warranty on it much longer than the bumper-to-bumper warranty on the car in general? If it's a covered repair, then I'll take it to the dealer. Otherwise I'll go to the local shop.

5/50 warranty ended in 1994. Emission warranty is 8/80 and only the catalytic converter and the ECM/PCM are covered.

Subject: Possible SES Light, DTC P0449 and RVS Inoperative
Models: 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
A condition exist that may cause the SES light to be on and may or may not have a complaint of Remote Vehicle Start (RVS) inoperative. After further investigation you may find a code P0449 stored into the PCM. This code may have set due to the Underhood Bussed Electrical Center (UBEC) having a loose terminal.
Recommendation/Instructions:
It is recommended that you first pull all codes and clear them, if P0449 returns you will want to check the following:
Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve.
Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the voltage supply circuit terminal A and ground.
If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the voltage supply circuit for a loose connection at the Underhood Bussed Electrical Center (UBEC)
Loosen up the UBEC and inspect Connector 4 Terminal C5 for being backed out.
There have been documented cases where we found a backed out or bent terminal at connector 4 Terminal C5 (RED/WHT 1640) at the UBEC. This of course will cause a loss of voltage (possibly intermittent) to the VENT valve and set the P0449. If the terminal is backed out of the connector, replace the connector (the terminal lock is damaged and the terminal will not lock in place).
Inspect the corresponding male terminal on the UBEC. If there is a bent male terminal it is easy to straighten, using a business card (as a straight edge) and using needle nose pliers, straighten the terminal. Then use the business card again to check terminal alignment. All the terminals should now be aligned together. If you find the male terminal "twisted" then replace the UBEC
If the terminals are straight and are tight then proceed with normal diagnostics.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Condition
Some customers may comment about one or more of the following conditions:
• Intermittent no start
• Intermittent extended crank
• Intermittent start then stall
• Check engine light illuminated
• Intermittently functioning or inoperative electrical systems
Upon investigation, the technician may find DTC P0442 or P0449 set as current or in history. These DTCs may also be accompanied by other DTCs.
Cause
These conditions may be caused by poor electrical contact between the underhood fuse block (UBEC) and its connectors. This poor contact may be due a bent or twisted male terminal (as shown above) on the UBEC side. During assembly when the UBEC is bolted to the connectors, the male terminal contacts the edge of the mating female terminal and pushes the terminal (1) out of the cavity. When this occurs, the terminal lock on the connector breaks and the terminal will no longer lock into the connector.
Correction
Remove the UBEC from the connectors. Visually inspect the suspect connector to see if the terminal has been pushed out of its cavity. If the terminal has been pushed out of its cavity, the terminal lock is damaged and connector replacement is required. Also, inspect the terminal for damage and replace if necessary. Straighten the UBEC male terminal (use a business card as a straight edge). If the terminal is twisted, attempt to straighten it using needle nose pliers.

Those come straight off of the TSB. It's amazing how far these have advanced since we no longer get them in paper form, but rather off the GM Global Connect web site.
