the stock setup works quite well, just not very visually appealing.
Some who have swapped to these after market CAI 's complained of less fuel mileage and MAF sensors fouled by to much oil on the filter, so clean the new filter and lightly spray filter oil on the new filter or go with a dry filter.
Somebody had a used K&N for the SS in the classified ads recently.

I don't think you will notice much of any improvement. Save your money and keep the filter changed often and you will be just fine. use the money towards another mod that you are thinking about buying already.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.
Au contraire...
The K&N intake tube, is the most awesome, aftermarket part, that you
can install, on your HHR SS.
Night/Day deference...
Off idle, & general around town, cruising, is greatly improved, + it removes,
the stock intake restriction, that lets me rocket down the 1/4 in 12.30 seconds...
All other aftermarket systems, cause problems, such as tuning issues, & a loss of low speed torque.
You can just buy the k&N intake tube, by itself...

So mix and match the K&N intake tube to the stock air filter box
