GM put out a book about fixing up the ecotec to racing specs, I think it used the term "stages". There are some nice parts in there, camshafts, pistons etc. The turbo upgrade came out long after that.

it looks like a LNF to me but what do you think
WOW! a 500HP LNF.... That's more than a couple of sensors and a reflash!

I can tell you there sure isn't much back pressure on the exhaust, looks like straight pipe(s) after the turbo.... They said they would be putting a lot of miles on that car, but I can't believe it is street legal with that exhaust?
Does anyone know if there are any other photos of the engine, other than the 1 in the article?

Hey Guys,
This article states an ECOTEC topping 650HP @ 19lbs of boost! They were shooting for 800HP! thats like 6.2HP per Cubic Inch.....Nuts!
They were using a 2.2L and the article is from 2001 I think. I was very impressed at what the GM Team was able to keep stock! Don't know what ever happened but they had an ultimate goal of 1000HP

Here is the GM Ecotec perfromace book. Ot covers mostly the LSJ engine and the three stages it uses.

This is the old book as they have the new that covers just a little on the LNF.

Once you get past the LSJ Stage two the numbers are kind of useless as you are getting into specific built racing engines and they often use mor than just the parts for the III recomendations.

John Lingenfelter raced for my company a Cobalt that used the LSJ with an Turbo. He was well over 1500 HP and was still using the Saab Ecotec Head. He had to mod stock parts as there were few race parts since he was the firts to really build in this area.

He later went to a 3.6 V6 Turbo. This is the set up that was going 2,000 HP and he later crashed that lead to his death indirectly.

He also took a Z24 Cavalier sedan prototype from GM and built a 2.2 Turbo in it for my company. We had the car for a while and this is what I think help lead to the LNF as it was a very similar set up. John did a lot of work for GM back then and this may have given GM the input on what made a good set up.

The last I heard this car was sold to some kid in Iowa and stolen. A the shame is I don't think he knew what he had.

If you don't have the Ecotec Performance book it is available from GM and is a good read. The new version has a chart with how much HP each stock part will take.

This is the old book on this link you can save or print. http://www.gmperformancedivision.com/pulse/manuals.aspx

It is a shame we lost Lingenfelter. He was a great engine builder and a very good racer. Better yet I got to spend some time with him and we talked cars. He was a great person and a real car guy. He was every bit as good as some of the greats like Smokey Yunick.

Oh ALso note that with the new Tubo Ecotec engines to come in some of the new cars like the Buick Regal and others we will still see a lot of engine parts we can use.
